Aviation, Forest Fire and Emergency Services provides wildland fire management services for the province of Ontario including fire management policies and strategies, fire prevention, mitigation and detection, and the basic resources for managing forest fires; aviation flight and maintenance crews and equipment in support of forest fire and natural resources management, and other specialized aviation services, including non-scheduled air transport to all government ministries and agencies; and emergency management in response to forest fires, floods, drought/low water, dam failures, erosion, soil and bedrock instability, crude oil and natural gas exploration, natural gas and hydrocarbon underground storage, and salt solution mining emergencies.

About the job

The Mitigation and Partnerships unit of the Aviation, Forest Fire and Emergency Services is seeking a qualified candidate to support the development and delivery of modern FireSmart, mitigation, prevention, and public education programs to help mitigate the negative impacts of wildland fire in Ontario.

The Mitigation and Partnerships Unit is responsible for:
• Leading and supporting the development of Community Wildland Fire Protection Plans (CWPPs) in municipalities, Indigenous communities and unorganized territories.
• Leading and delivering the wildland fire risk mitigation program.
• Providing leadership and coordination for Ontario's FireSmart program, community risk assessments, and incentive programs.
• Developing and maintaining partnerships with provincial and federal government bodies, municipalities, indigenous communities, unorganized territories, industry, and non-governmental organizations.
• Educating the public on preparedness, mitigation and FireSmart through outreach and engagement activities.
• Leading and facilitating the fire suppression agreement program with municipalities, unorganized territories, indigenous communities, and the federal government.

As a member of a multi-disciplinary team, you will:

• Assist with the development, implementation and integration of the fire prevention/education, FireSmart communities and FireSmart forest management outreach programs with community partners, stakeholders, landowners and other organizations.
• Conduct field work for risk and hazard assessments, determine mitigation measures and prepare technical evaluations and recommendations for municipalities, unincorporated territories, Indigenous communities, and community groups.
• Develop and assess the viability of outreach partnership and stewardship agreements.
• Facilitate technical knowledge transfer to internal and external stakeholders through education, training, and outreach activities related to FireSmart programming, community wildland fire protection planning, fire prevention, and general wildland fire management.
• Function in roles on wildfires and prescribed burns throughout Ontario, Canada and the USA.

What you bring to the team


Technical knowledge:

• You have knowledge of resource management practices and the ability to apply guideline requirements and planning tools to develop and implement FireSmart communities and forest management risk/hazard assessment and mitigation plans.
• You have knowledge of natural resource management principles, practices and field operations as they relate to outreach activities with partners, landowners and stakeholders.
• You have general knowledge and understanding of fire management activities as they relate to ecological sustainability, biodiversity and species at risk.

Communication and interpersonal skills:

• You have proven oral and written communication skills to interact with internal and external stakeholders, prepare reports, draft correspondence, make presentations and exchange advice.
• You have interpersonal skills to liaise with stakeholders and staff.

Analytical and problem solving skills:

• You have proven analytical, problem solving and technical skills to review and evaluate plans, develop solutions and options, and make recommendations.

Project management and organizational skills:

• You have proven project management and organizational skills to plan and manage assigned projects.
• You have the ability to work on multiple assignments concurrently and meet tight deadlines.

Computer proficiency:

• You are proficient with computers and software applications such as word processing, spreadsheets, presentation, databases, email and internet.
