About the job

As a member of the Science and Research Branch:

You will conduct primary applied research to support forest management and silviculture in Ontario's forests. You will support data collection and processing primarily through desktop research. You will support knowledge transfer to policy makers and forestry practitioners.

During your internship you may:

• prepare and write manuscripts for publication in the peer-reviewed literature on forest management, forest carbon, forest economics or life cycle analysis in Ontario
• assist in data collection across the Boreal and/or Great Lakes – St. Lawrence forests of Ontario
• interpret spatial and temporal results from research studies
• prepare presentations and visual aids
• communicate your work to clients and stakeholders in written and verbal form

What you bring to the team


Eligibility:

• proof of eligibility to work in Canada
• have graduated or will graduate from an approved or legally authorized college or university with a diploma or an equivalent degree or postgraduate certificate or diploma within the last four years
• candidates are only eligible to participate in one MNR 12-month placement and must not have participated in the MNR internship program in the past
• not a permanent employee in the Ontario Public Service

Knowledge, skills and abilities:

• Basic knowledge of forest ecology, soils, and silviculture in Ontario's Great Lakes-St. Lawrence Forest and/or Boreal region
• Basic knowledge of forest management, forestry supply chains and/or forest economics in Ontario, Canada and/or North America
• Basic knowledge of forest carbon, wood products and/or experience with life-cycle analysis
• Basic knowledge and/or experience of conducting independent research
• Basic knowledge of biodiversity-ecosystem functioning in forest ecosystems
• Good interpersonal and communications skills (oral and written); and
• Good organizational and project management skills.

Analytical and research skills:

• You have analytical and organizational skills to review information and reports and make recommendations/solutions
• You have basic data management and statistical analysis skills
• You have basic report writing skills

Computer skills

• Ability to use various computer software including word-processing, Microsoft Access, GIS, internet, and spreadsheet applications to manage and update data collection, and prepare correspondence and reports.
