BRANCH OVERVIEW:Law Enforcement Complaints Agency (LECA) – formerly known as the Office of the Independent Police Review Director (OIPRD) – is responsible for receiving, managing and overseeing public complaints about misconduct of police officers. LECA accepts complaints about the conduct of the following:
•All municipal, regional, and provincial (OPP) police officers;
•Special Constables employed by the Niagara Parks Commission;
•Peace Officers in the Legislative Protective Service; and
•First Nations police officers if the police service opts into the CSPA.
As a civilian arm's-length agency of the Ontario Ministry of the Attorney General, our decisions are independent from the Ontario government, the police, and the community.
The Legal Services Unit is responsible for: 1)providing integrated legal services and advice to the LECA staff; 2) assessing and making recommendations to proceed with investigations; 3) providing legal support to investigators concerning legal rights, scope of power, and statutory interpretation of legislation/regulations; 4) assisting with investigation reviews and recommending plans for informal or mediated resolutions; 5)appearing on behalf of LECA at appeals to the Divisional Court and other proceedings, and; 6) legal policy work and liaison with the Ministry of the Attorney General and other Ministries.

Mandatory requirements
You are required to be a law student (LL.B, J.D. or equivalent) who will be completing their 2nd year of law school in 2026 and entering the Law Society of Ontario's lawyer licensing process Articling/LPP/IPC program in 2027-2028.
Essential Skills
Applicants should possess the following skills:
• strong legal research, writing and editing skills;
• strong communication skills;
• strong organizational skills;
• the ability to work independently and as part of a team;
• computer proficiency.
