Please note: This position requires you to work on an on-call basis. The hours of work are up to 40 hours per week, including weekends and statutory holidays, based on operational requirements and with no guaranteed hours.
About the job
Working as part of a small maintenance team at the Sarnia Jail, you will enjoy a variety of tasks as well as a flexible work schedule. In this role you can expect to:
• Assist skilled tradespeople with a variety of maintenance and repair duties in carpentry, masonry, and HVAC areas
• Build and install partitions, renovating, repairing furniture, windows, brick and plaster surfaces
• Paint, maintain, and inspect equipment and installations
• Assist Ministry or private contract personnel in major structural repairs or alterations
• Maintain Ministry and government requirements for correctional facility security
• Maintain work order and preventative maintenance logs
• Perform routine and preventative maintenance
• Supervise and instruct inmate workers
• Ensure that all work is performed in compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act
What you bring to the team
Maintenance Knowledge and Experience
• You have extensive knowledge and experience performing a wide range of general maintenance and trades work
• You understand systems, specifications, plans, and blueprints
• You have experience with the safe operation of hand/powered tools and equipment
• You have knowledge of health and safety
• You have demonstrated ability to follow workplace policies and protocols in order to ensure a safe and secure work area
Skills
• You have communication skills in order to assist other skilled tradespeople, instruct and supervise inmate workers, and interact with correctional staff
• You have problem-solving skills to recognize hazards, address maintenance issues, and complete assigned work on time
