About the job
In this role, you will:
• develop status reports and recommendations, and designs/implements monitoring programs/experiments to support rehabilitation and promote conservation of habitat, food webs and fish communities, in nearshore habitat segments and lake affected zones of rivers
• plans, organizes and implements projects to acquire information in support of projects
• integrates management information, resource status and ecological models to develop rehabilitation strategy and targets
What you bring to the team
Mandatory requirements
You must have a valid class 'G' driver's licence or equivalent, as recognized by the Province of Ontario. The offer of employment is conditional upon the successful candidate providing proof that they have a valid driver's licence upon being hired.
Technical expertise:
• knowledge of statistics, experimental design and computer modelling techniques to design sampling and experimental management studies, analyze and interpret results, run computer simulation models, and transfer results to the field (knowledge of fish populations and habitat models, aquatic ecosystem classification methods etc.)
• knowledge of theories, principles and practices concerning aquatic ecosystems and ecosystem management, particularly in the areas of fish communities, fisheries, limnology, wetlands and the structure and function of food webs
Analytical skills:
• analytical and problem-solving skills to clarify problems, evaluate options and identify approaches to assessment of fish communities, fish habitat and aquatic food web
• interpretation and synthesis skills to bring information from scientific studies into the analysis of survey data
• knowledge of scientific method with ability to have project findings or products reviewed and accepted by peers
Communication and interpersonal skills:
• proven communication skills to communicate with a variety of audiences from the general public to research scientists
• ability to work in a multi-disciplinary team environment and with partners/collaborators from Indigenous communities, other Ministries, Conservation Authorities, farm organizations, interest groups, municipalities, etc. through demonstrated good negotiation and interpersonal skills
Essential skills:
• ability to design, and implement projects and work plans through to completion.
• ability to work on Great Lakes vessels and other boats, including electrofishing boats and in inclement weather
Computer proficiency:
• proficient with information technology, database management, word processing and graphics software to develop and maintain databases for resource management projects, analyze results and present reports on findings
