The Local Government Division, in the Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing, is searching for an Indigenous Policy Specialist/Coordinator to join their dynamic team. As a valued member of our division, you will be at the forefront of developing policies and initiatives across the ministry that drive positive change. Your expertise will be instrumental in providing crucial advice to other ministry divisions on Indigenous matters, ensuring that our initiatives are inclusive, forward-thinking, and culturally sensitive.
About the job
In this role, you will:
• Provide specialized advice, coordination, technical guidance and policy analysis and support regarding Indigenous issues and related matters impacting provincial and municipal interests, priorities and relations
• Lead by providing guidance, support and direction to team members
• Perform project management by developing work plans, coordinating with project teams, tracking progress and timelines
• Liaise and work with other program areas, ministries, Indigenous partners and external stakeholders to collaborate and deliver on cross-sectoral policy initiatives and programs
• Conduct complex policy, economic and statistical research into various options, proposals and developments in other jurisdictions across Canada
• Provide strategic advice to senior management on Indigenous related matters impacting the ministry
What you bring to the team
Specialized and technical knowledge:
You have the ability to demonstrate knowledge of:
• issues and priorities intersecting between government jurisdictions and Indigenous communities land claim negotiations
• relevant local government programs, policy and legislation across Ontario and Canada and trends on municipal-Indigenous matters, including consultation and engagement activities
• policy/program development, government approval and decision-making processes, and accountability frameworks
Leadership and project management skills:
You have the ability to:
• chair/lead/participate in cross-sectorial working groups, meetings and events
• lead and manage the development of a variety large-scale policy, programs and initiatives concurrently
• champion project management approaches, coach staff, lead multi-disciplinary teams and provide expert advice to staff, management and partners
• provide strategic advice to senior management to support policy and program development needs
Communication and partner/stakeholder management:
You have the ability to:
• apply political acuity and diplomacy to address issues, resolve competing interests, and provide recommendations to senior management, partners, and stakeholders.
• prepare and present reports, Cabinet submissions, briefing materials, and communications on complex issues.
• lead consultations with partners and stakeholders using consultation practices, consensus-building, and mediation skills to ensure shared understanding.
Research, analytical and problem-solving skills:
You have the ability to:
• design, develop and plan a range of qualitative and quantitative research approaches
• evaluate proposals to identify and manage issues, risks, and impacts, and recommend alternative policy options and solutions
• use analytical and research skills to prepare and analyse complex submissions and projects
• analyze economic, statistical, and financial data to advise management on the fiscal implications of policy and program options for government, Indigenous communities, and other stakeholders.
