Step 1: All regular/fixed-term OCAA and ALOC lawyers on staff, current Redeployment List Members and current Articling Student Hireback Pool Members.Step 2: In the absence of qualified applicants at Step 1 the competition may be reposted so that external applicants or non-members of the above-mentioned groups would then be eligible to apply.
The Court of Appeal for Ontario seeks an experienced research counsel with expertise in either corporate-commercial law or in criminal law.
About the job
Duties will include:
•Conducting intensive and in-depth legal research on a range of complex and/or jurisprudential issues and preparing analytical memoranda for members of the judiciary and/or the Executive Legal Officer in the area of corporate-commercial law or criminal law and other areas as required
•Assisting judges in editing their reasons for judgment
•Assisting with knowledge management, including drafting and updating internal legal guides and other resources
•Assisting with/participating in court initiatives including policy development, court modernization, digital transformation and other initiatives to support the efficient administration of the Court of Appeal for Ontario
•Ensuring timely and comprehensive responses are made to requests from the bar, self-represented litigants and the public on behalf of the Office of the Chief Justice and/or the Executive Legal Officer
•Supporting internal and external committees
What you bring to the team
Mandatory requirements
Membership in good standing as a lawyer with the Law Society of Ontario
Knowledge and Skills
•Demonstrated judgment and analytical ability on complex legal and/or jurisprudential issues in corporate-commercial law or criminal law
•Demonstrated knowledge of statutes related to the administration of justice, including the Courts of Justice Act
•Demonstrated understanding of appellate rules and procedures
•Proven interpersonal, oral and written communication and organizational skills
•Ability to produce high quality work under demanding timelines
•Proven research and computer skills, including familiarity with electronic research tools and technical ability to work effectively with court case management databases
•Demonstrated commitment to diversity, inclusion and anti-racism.
•Experience working with judges
