ELIGIBILITY FOR THIS COMPETITION IS RESTRICTED TO STEP 1 CANDIDATES INCLUDING OPS ALOC AND OCAA LAWYERS living or working within 125 km of this location. Note: Eligible lawyers from outside the Area of Search may apply but will not be entitled to relocation or travel expenses for the transfer as set out below.

The Ministry of the Attorney General, Civil Law Division, seeks counsel to join the legal team at the Crown Law Office – Civil (“CLOC”). This is an opportunity to work in an exciting and supportive legal office on litigation files that intersect with government policy and impact the public interest.

CLOC represents the province in civil and public law litigation including judicial reviews, appeals, class actions, tort claims, s.35 claims, civil forfeiture proceedings and other issues of significant public importance. Counsel will gain exposure to diverse areas of civil law while working alongside experienced colleagues in an environment that values mentorship, professional growth, and excellence in advocacy.

About the job

Duties will include:

• Working as a junior counsel within CLOC, representing the Crown, provincial officials and employees, and agencies, boards and tribunals in various legal proceedings, including actions, applications, appeals and applications for judicial review at various levels of court and before administrative bodies.
• Working as part of a team with respect to the above-noted matters, and also handling files independently, including Wagg motions, Rowbotham applications, Human Rights Tribunal of Ontario applications and civil forfeiture proceedings under the Civil Remedies Act.

Mandatory requirements

• Membership in good standing as a lawyer with the Law Society of Ontario

Technical Legal Experience

• Recent civil litigation experience, including recent carriage of your own civil litigation files.
• Knowledge and experience with public law litigation, including experience litigating Crown liability issues under the Crown Liability and Proceedings Act, 2019 .
• Knowledge and experience with respect to civil forfeiture proceedings under the Civil Remedies Act, including experience with preservation motions and forfeiture applications.
• Knowledge of the Crown Liability and Proceedings Act, 2019, Courts of Justice Act, Rules of Civil Procedure, Civil Remedies Act, Judicial Review Procedure Act, Class Proceedings Act, 1992, and rules of evidence.
• Demonstrated ability to conduct research, handle own files and assist senior and intermediate litigation counsel with complex litigation files.
• Experience and ability to work to strict deadlines in a high-volume environment.
• Demonstrated judgment, analytical, interpersonal, written and oral communication skills.
• Experience working constructively on teams of diverse members and demonstrated interest in Ontario Public Service priorities relating to diversity.
