The Toronto East Detention Centre is seeking an experienced professional Cleaner to provide cleaning and minor maintenance services for the correctional facility.

Please note: this position requires working with and providing direction to inmate workers and is eligible for a Custodial Responsibility Allowance.

About the job

• Perform physical cleaning services in all areas of the institution such as operating heavy duty industrial cleaning equipment
• Use platform lifts as well as lift and move office equipment and furniture to allow for cleaning
• Perform waste management duties, including lifting and disposing garbage and recycling
• Maintain premises by cleaning, mopping, vacuuming, dusting offices, corridors, washing woodwork and tiles, walls and ceilings, removing graffiti, cleaning inside windows, light fixtures and vents, removing wax and finishing floors, cleaning washrooms and replenishing supplies
• Perform general services such as unloading supplies from trucks, locking doors, switching off utilities, and reporting defective equipment
• Maintain records and security of cleaning supplies used, and requesting supervisor to requisition replacement supplies as needed
• Supervise, instruct, and train select inmate workers in performing cleaning tasks
• Other duties, as assigned

What you bring to the team


Specialized Knowledge and Experience

• You have knowledge of and experience with industrial cleaning methods/processes
• You are experienced in the safe and proper operation of industrial cleaning equipment, machines and materials (i.e. floor polishers, vacuum cleaners, tools to perform required duties)
• You have knowledge of health and safety (including WHMIS and relevant legislation and regulations) for safe handling of chemical solutions and ensuring safe cleaning processes
• You have demonstrated ability to understand and comply with corporate policies and protocols in order to ensure safety and security of the work area, other staff, and inmate helpers

Problem-Solving Skills

• You can determine the type of cleaning agent/method to use for various cleaning tasks and coordinate daily priorities
• You are able to recognize when equipment needs maintenance or repair as well as report supply shortages
• You can identify security and workplace hazards so that corrective action can be prompt and report problems to the supervisor when necessary

Communication and Interpersonal Skills

• You are able to supervise and instruct select inmate helpers in cleaning duties
• You can convey information about the use and storage of cleaning products and equipment
• You can maintain records of supplies
• You can alert staff and inmates of caution where cleaning is taking place
