Note: Eligible lawyers from outside the Area of Search may apply but will not be entitled to relocation or travel expenses for the transfer as set out below.
Step 1: All regular/fixed-term OCAA and ALOC lawyers on staff, current Redeployment List Members and current Articling Student Hireback Pool Members.Step 2: In the absence of qualified applicants at Step 1 the competition may be reposted so that external applicants or non-members of the above-mentioned groups would then be eligible to apply.
The Ministry of the Attorney General, Civil Law Division, has an immediate opening for a counsel to join the Legal Services Branch of the Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks (MECP). Presently the office of this position is located at 135 St. Clair West in Toronto. However, the office will move to 483 Bay Street in Toronto in Fall 2026.

Duties will include:
•Providing written and oral legal advice to policy, program and operational clients in the MECP on a wide range of environmental, public law and Indigenous legal issues including the duty to consult
•Developing and drafting permits, approvals, orders, regulatory standards, guidelines and other documents
• Supporting the development of legislation
•Preparing agreements, memoranda of law, opinions and briefing notes
•Briefing senior officials and senior management
•Assisting with litigation matters and liaising with litigation counsel
•Participating in committee, project and administrative duties as assigned
What you bring to the team
Mandatory requirements
• Membership in good standing as a lawyer with the Law Society of Ontario
Knowledge and Skills
•Thorough knowledge and understanding of environmental law and Indigenous legal issues including the duty to consult
•Experience working with key MECP permitting statutes such as the Environmental Protection Act, Ontario Water Resources Act, Safe Drinking Water Act, 2002 and the Environmental Assessment Act
•An understanding of the nature of the relationship between Indigenous peoples and the government
•Demonstrated judgment and analytical skills to provide strategic, solution-oriented advice
•Proven ability to identify, manage and problem solve contentious issues
•Ability to handle a high-volume practice and advise on urgent matters with short turnaround time.
•Experience working collaboratively and constructively in teams of diverse members
•Demonstrated great client service with a proven record of building relationships with clients and colleagues and of fostering and creating a culture of diversity, anti-racism, equity and wellness in the workplace
•Proven oral and written communication skills
