Purpose of Position :

To prepare and maintain Ontario Police College training vehicles in good mechanical condition, to construct and service specialized vehicular and stationary training facilities and equipment.

Duties / Responsibilities :

1. Performs initial preparation work on training vehicle fleet, and maintains motor vehicles in good mechanical condition by:
• Performing safety inspections, doing minor body repairs, installing emergency police and training vehicles equipment;
• Carrying out periodic and 600 km inspections;
• Reconditioning brake systems, replacing or repairing parts where necessary;
• Reconditioning carburation/ fuel injection system by testing, adjusting and repairing where necessary;
• Requisitioning and assisting with the selection of parts and special tools as required.

2. Performs necessary repair work to major units such as:
• Completing major overhauls on motors, inspecting and checking fuel systems, engine management systems, and carburation systems; inspecting for damage, and checking and testing compression to ensure safe and economical operation of driver training vehicles;
• Inspecting and completely overhauling steering and alignments to front ends;
• Checking and overhauling all electrical components including alternators, regulators and ignitions system;
• Overhauling rear axles and drive lines including universal joints and propeller shafts
• Testing vehicles after work is completed;
• Performing minor arc welding, gas welding and steel fabrication.
• Reporting to supervisor regarding additional repairs, etc.;
• Diagnosing automatic transmission malfunctions and overhauling when required.

3. Maintains vehicles and equipment for the Ontario Police College training vehicles and performs related duties by:
• Assisting in the design and fabrication of specialized vehicular training equipment

4. Performs related duties by:
• Greasing and lubricating vehicles;
• Changing tires on training vehicles;
• Removing special training equipment from vehicles which are being traded in;
• Carrying out general garage duties such as, gas or propane or as assigned.
• Maintaining vehicle records;
• Procurement of necessary parts in accordance with Ministry procedure;
• Maintaining parts inventories;
• As assigned

Staffing and Licencing :

Possession of a valid Class A Mechanics license and a valid Ontario Drivers License.

Knowledge :

Must supply own tools and have the knowledge and skill to use related equipment to perform a variety of mechanical repair work and fabrication on vehicles and equipment.
