Purpose of Position :

In Ontario's largest maximum security detention centre, under the general supervision of the Storekeeper, the position is responsible for the inmate laundry section of the stores area; acting as Storekeeper as required; assisting in stores area.

Duties / Responsibilities :

1. Assisting Storekeeper as required, acting as Storekeeper in absence as required.
2. Taking charge of the inmate laundry section of the stores area, ensuring proper security and records are maintained, computer inventory control maintained, laundry and supplies accounted for, and replacement articles requisitioned; incoming laundry checked and accounted for, sorted and
distributed to the units; ensuring soiled laundry is collected from units, accounted for, and sorted for delivery to laundry cleaning facility via transports; organization, safety, and security of work area; proper handling of clean and soiled laundry, using forklift as required.
3. Ensuring safety and security of laundry assistant and offender helpers and security of offender laundry area of warehouse, maintaining work area by cleaning and ensuring all hazards are safely contained.
4. Sorting of clean laundry, loading carts, delivering laundry to all areas of facility, and unloading carts; bagging soiled laundry, retrieving from units and loading same onto delivery transport.
5. Providing supervision to selected inmate helpers, instructing in work methods and preparing reports on conduct and performance; ensuring safety and security of inmate helpers, tools, equipment, supplies and work area.

Knowledge :

Incumbent requires the following:

Knowledge of Ministry warehousing/shipping practices and procedures to supervise the inmate laundry area of the warehouse, organize the location and inventory control records, ensure the proper receipt and delivery of laundry and replenish supplies and inventory.
Knowledge of proper clean and soiled laundry handling to receive, sort and distribute clean laundry, e.g. checking, recording, and monitoring the movement of laundry, and collection of soiled laundry and distribution for cleaning.
Knowledge of Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS), Occupational Health and Safety Act, and institutional security practices/procedures to ensure compliance with standards, proper equipment operation/utilization, laundry handling and to maintain the safety and security of the work area and inmate helpers.
Knowledge of equipment/stock tracking and computer inventory control database system to input, update, and access data related to the stock keeping operation.
Knowledge of security practices/techniques to ensure custody and control of inmate helpers.
Knowledge of proper loading procedures and use of forklift.

Skills :

Analytical and problem-solving skills when organizing and operating the inmate laundry area of the warehouse; checking incoming laundry for correct quantity, loss or damage; maintaining inventory control, determining future laundry article requirements, tracking damage and replacement goods,
determining proper methods of work. Job requires reasoning skills to review requests for replacement articles, check proper authority and requisition additional inventory.
Analytical skills to provide input into offender disciplinary/performance reports, and to recognize security and workplace hazards so that corrective action is promptly taken.
Verbal and written communication skills to exchange facts and information, and to record inventory/cleaning logs, and to supervise and train inmate helpers and requisitioning supplies.
Incumbent must possess tact and discretion to maintain control of inmate helpers, when addressing behavioural issues as they arise, and ensuring adherence to institutional safety and security policies, and procedures.
Ability to sort bedding and clothing and distribute to proper locations, applying standard precautions for handling soiled laundry.

Freedom of Action :

Incumbent is required to work in accordance with Ministry stock keeping and warehouse procedures/practices, institution policies and procedures with regard to security standards and relevant legislation government safety requirements when organizing and operating laundry stores area.
Must notify supervisor of matters not covered by detailed procedures, or difficulties pertaining to offender supervision.
