Purpose of Position :
To provide care, assessment and treatment in the provision of highly specialized residential treatment services for children and youth with complex mental health issues and/or developmental challenges, through utilization of best practices from current literature in collaboration with the multidisciplinary treatment team, guardian and community.
Duties / Responsibilities :
Under the supervision of the Residence Manager working any assigned shift during a twenty-four (24) hour period and within a collaborative multidisciplinary team, provides care, assessment and treatment for clients by:
1. Assisting with normal activities of daily living; recognizing physical signs and symptoms of health conditions, report concerns to nurse and/or physician; providing an assessment of a client in accordance to the Plan of Care goals; providing behaviour support.
2. As a Primary Counselor, providing individual care and developing programs for a specific client.
3. Providing individual counseling and group therapy for residential clients; recognizing the stages of
behavioural escalation and responding in a clinically appropriate manner to deescalate the behaviour;
developing strategies to reduce the clients concerning behaviours.
4. Maintaining all mandatory training to comply with CPRI/Ministry/legislated requirements.
5. Maintaining clinical records and documents in accordance with CPRI and program policies and processes, such as:
- data collection related to specific individual programs;
- complete Progress Notes in client clinical file;
- conference reports on individual clients for use/information purposes for the treatment team
- serious occurrence, accident/injury and unusual occurrence reports, risk management and secure
isolation documentation.
6. Actively participating in communication processes within the residence, across the facility and with community partners; liaising with family, guardians, educational and community partners to share/obtain information; ensuring regular contact with client, families throughout the residential staff and during periods of transition pre and post discharge; attending meetings (within CPRI and community) to provide education, update progress; identify compliance related issues to ensure unit meets residential licensing requirements.
7. Attends and participates in meetings such as:
- treatment for clients, and to discuss future directions in service and other educational programs
- to attend shift changes, unit meetings, all staff forums, program meetings as required
8. Performs related duties such as:
- housekeeping duties to meet acceptable standards of cleanliness;
- noting and reporting structural and/or equipment problems; removing any immediate hazards;
- assisting in the instruction and supervision of students and volunteers;
- some meal preparation and serving of client meals
9. Participate in and support CPRI/Ministry research and education initiatives by:
- completing questionnaires
- rating scores as required by facility research programs/protocols
- collecting and maintaining statistics, program evaluation and research data as requested
10. Other Duties as Assigned
Staffing and Licensing :
Successful completion of the Child & Youth Worker or the Developmental Service Worker program or equivalent.
Knowledge :
Ability to identify, assess and prioritize strengths and problems of children with developmental, physical and emotional disorders, and to develop and establish treatment programs. Knowledge of evidence based practices for children and adolescents with developmental delay and/or mental health problems. Requires a working knowledge of professional, community and facility resources available to assist the child/family.
Skills :
Effective oral and written communication skills are essential in liaising and establishing working relationships with residential staff members, clinicians, families and community partners. Ability to obtain and recertify in PMAB, First Aid and CPR.
