Purpose of Position :
To support the development and interpretation of evidence-based policies related to species conservation management. To provide technical and administrative support to the development of regulations, policies, procedures and programs for the Species Conservation Policy Branch (SCPB) that may include a focus on: wildlife management policy; fisheries management policy; species at risk management policy; stewardship and/or biodiversity conservation policy.
Duties / Responsibilities :
1. Assist in the research, analysis and synthesis of program data, records, jurisdictional scans and other sources of information to inform evidence- based policy development and interpretation with respect to species management. Providing support to manage information through data collection, consolidation, initiative tracking, database management, analysis and reporting. Compile, analyze and interpret data in GIS and tabular databases to support policy and program development and implementation.
2. Assist Species Conservation Policy Branch staff in the development of options and recommendations on policies with respect to species and resource management.
3. Liaise with technical (science), policy and implementation staff across the Branch, MNRF, and other ministries on policy projects. Establish networks and assist staff in consulting with other MNRF staff, other Ontario ministries, Indigenous communities and organizations, and other governments to contribute to policy development, facilitation and interpretation of resource management initiatives.
4. Assist in the preparation of technical reports, background reports, discussion papers, correspondence, presentation materials, briefing notes, analyses and other written communications to support the development and interpretation of SCPB policies.
5. Assist in developing and maintaining effective information management systems including research files and databases, electronic tracking/filing systems and hard copy records, and identifying opportunities to improve the management of information.
6. Maintain high standards of professional conduct and accountability for maintaining confidentiality of information.

8. The incumbent shall, while in the workplace conduct themselves in compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and any workplace practices as directed by their immediate supervisor. The incumbent shall report any hazards of which they are aware of to their immediate supervisor
Knowledge :
Understanding of the theory, principles and practices of natural resource management and environmental risk assessment planning and management.
Knowledge of data and information analysis techniques and computer-based analytical, data management and modeling techniques to research, compile and analyze data; prepare reports and related materials, and recommend effective courses of action.
Knowledge of policy development processes and Aboriginal and public consultation and engagement approaches.
Knowledge of policy research and analysis techniques, environmental scanning, modelling and trends forecasting, including utilizing databases and websites to gather, summarize and interpret information.
General understanding of legislative, regulatory, policy and planning tools that support the natural management in Ontario.
Knowledge of personal computers including Microsoft Office software (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access)
Job requires knowledge of worker responsibility as outlined in the Occupational Health and Safety Act.

Freedom of Action :
Work is assigned and carried out under the general supervision of the Section Manager and with the guidance of senior policy staff.
Work is guided by Ministry and government policies, legislation, objectives and priorities.
