Purpose of Position :

To provide geotechnical services and support and minor administrative assistance to the Resident Geologist Program.

Duties / Responsibilities :

1. Under the operational guidance and direction of the Regional Resident Geologist and/or District Geologist, provides geotechnical support to the Resident Geologist's Program by:
- providing geotechnical support and in-field assistance to the Regional Resident and/or District Geologists in conducting property visits and/or other field investigations (documenting mineral occurrences, mine hazards, etc.);
- assisting in the preparation of geotechnical information for property visits and field trips conducted by the Regional Resident and/or District Geologists;
- assisting in processing, maintaining and client service delivery of assessment files and related databases;
- assisting other office staff in the regular maintenance and updating Minerals Deposits Inventory (MDI) database by inputting field data collected by the Regional Resident and/or District Geologists and by reviewing and incorporating new data as appropriate from assessment reports, company press releases, media articles, company annual reports, periodicals, etc.;
- researching and compiling geotechnical data for reports, compilation studies/maps, mineral potential assessments, etc., conducted by the Regional Resident and/or District Geologists;
- providing routine data compilations and GIS services related to the automated Provincially Significant Mineral Potential (PSMP) application and/or other GIS-related applications as deemed appropriate for the Regional Resident and/or District Geologists and/or the Regional Land Use Geologist;
- assisting in the preparation of the annual Report of Activities, monthly reports and/or for the other purposes as required;
- assisting in the design and construction of poster displays and/or related materials for presentation by the Regional Resident and/or District Geologists at conferences, seminars, etc., and assisting in the presentation of such materials as appropriate;
- assisting in the maintenance and delivery of office library functions and client services;
- assisting in processing, incorporating and maintaining donated materials into RGP office files as appropriate;
- assisting in collecting, cataloging and maintaining rock samples, ore suites, thin and polished sections, etc.;
- where appropriate, assisting in the provision of drill core library (DCL) functions and services, including maintaining the local DCL database, retrieving and re-stacking drill core for industry clients, etc.

2. Under the guidance an direction of the Resident and/or District Geologist, provides technical support, assistance and information services to clients by:
- where appropriate, assisting in providing front-counter client services;
- supplying geoscience/geotechnical advice and information in response to visitor/telephone/fax/e-mail client inquiries
- identifying rock and mineral specimens for clients or referring clients to the Resident or District Geologist;
- instructing and assisting clients in office/file/library organization and procedures, providing additional sources of information as required, etc.;
- instructing and assisting clients in the use of applicable office and field equipment (e.g. photocopiers, client-access computers, binocular/petrographic microscopes, beep-mats, etc.) as required.

3. Under the guidance and direction of the Resident Geologist and/or District Geologist, assists in general office clerical and administrative functions, including:
- assisting in maintaining a log of all client office visits, client telephone/fax inquiries, publication sales and other information as required for inclusion in monthly reports, annual report of activities, etc.;
- assisting in the proper maintenance of office and field equipment;
- assisting in properly maintaining office administrative and technical files and filing systems, including records, maps, reports, records, correspondence, legal documents, receipts, donated materials from the private sector, etc.;
- assisting in ordering/purchasing and stocking office and field supplies as per ministry procedures, as required;
- assisting in forwarding office expenditures information, vehicle logs, etc., to appropriate administrative staff as required;
- assisting in maintaining first aid kits, vehicle kits, etc.;
- assisting in maintaining computerized client mailing lists, addressing labels, etc., as required;
- photocopy/faxing/e-mailing materials and information as required;
- assisting in computer/technical training for contract staff and summer students, and reporting on and/or trouble-shooting basic computer hardware/software problems.

4. Under the guidance and direction of the Resident Geologist and/or District Geologist, performs other duties as assigned, such as:
- providing training and assigning routine tasks to casual workers (contract staff, experience summer students, etc.)

Staffing and Licensing :

- Valid driver's licence to operate motor vehicles (light trucks, automobiles)
- Proficiency in oral French at the advanced level.
- Boat and motor operator's licence where appropriate and as required
- Forklift operator's licence where appropriate and as required

Knowledge :

- Working knowledge of geology usually obtained through a combination of education and experience in order to read and interpret geological maps, air photos, geotechnical reports, etc.; respond to clients' geotechnical requests and queries and to directly assist in field geoscience data gathering operations

- Good knowledge of Ministry-standard and RGP-standard computer software, including but not limited to: Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Access, Powerpoint, etc.); CAD for automated drafting; Arcview for PSMP/other GIS applications; ERMES (MDI, AMIS, DDH databases); DCL and other local RGP office databases; MLAS

- Working knowledge of the Mining Act and the geotechnical assessment system in Ontario

- Working knowledge of ENDM clerical and administrative policies and procedures - Knowledge of worker responsibilities as outlined in the Occupational Health & Safety Act.
