Purpose of Position :

As a member of the Resources Planning team, under the general supervision of the Zone Manager, and the professional direction of forester in the
Resources Planning Unit and Algonquin Park, assist with forest management program planning, monitoring and reporting.

Duties / Responsibilities :

1. Under the direction of forest management plan project managers support all forest planning activities by:

Collecting background information to support informed decision making and meet legislative requirements.

Provide planning team and task team day to day operational support (e.g. take minutes at planning team meetings)

Provide support in the reviewing of forest management plans, annual work schedules and annual reports

Provide support in developing public notices.

2. Support the lead on silviculture effectiveness monitoring program
3. Support the lead administration of the independent forest audit program (e.g status reports).
4. Support the Foresters and Senior Forest technical Specialist in licencing.
5. Support MNRF representatives on LCC in the Park.
6. Support the Foresters and Senior Forest technical Specialist in dealing with operational and compliance issues.
7. Other duties as assigned.

NOTE: The incumbent shall, while in the workplace, conduct themselves in compliance with the OH&S Act and any workplace practices as directed by their immediate supervisor and in accordance with the Internal Responsibility System as outlines in the OH&S Act.

Staffing and Licensing :

Proof of full-time enrolment in a recognized post-secondary college or university or graduation within the last five years.

Knowledge :

Basic working knowledge of silviculture, forest stand dynamics and environmental impacts on non-timber forest resources.

Some working knowledge of legislation, policies and procedures governing forest management planning in Ontario including current forest management principles and practices used in the Great Lakes and Boreal Forests.

Understanding of ecosystem sustainability and biodiversity.

Good interpersonal and communications skills (oral and written). Good organizational and project management skills.

Basic knowledge of computer applications and modelling.

Knowledge of worker responsibilities as outlined in the OH&S Act.

Skills :

Analytical and problem solving skills to review, analyze and evaluate Ministry data and information from staff and stakeholders to determine application of legislation/policy and contributing to problem resolution options.

Good verbal and written communication skills, including facilitation skills to assist in preparation for or participate in stakeholder meetings or public consultation processes or in responding to public inquiries.

Good interpersonal skills and ability to work in a team environment to interact with staff, members of industry, stakeholder groups, resource users and the general public.

Planning, coordination and time management skills to plan, coordinate or participate in individual and team projects, initiatives, proposals, and on concurrent timelines.

Freedom of Action :

Work is performed under the direction of the designated mentor in accordance with predetermined methods and procedures.

Job requires ongoing updates to supervisor and other team members through regular meetings, discussions and periodic reviews to deal with project issues.

Project issues and matters not covered by established procedures/guidelines are referred to Zone Manager for best method of resolution.

Work is regularly checked and monitored for progress by Zone Manager to ensure project objectives and timelines are met.
