Purpose of Position :

To provide support to the NOHFC Program Unit team in policy development, program review, planning and delivery activities; in supporting process evaluation and reengineering; and in carrying-out projects.

Duties / Responsibilities :

The Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation (NOHFC) mandate is to foster private sector job creation and economic development while continuing to play a significant role in helping northern communities build a foundation for future economic growth and enhanced quality of life. NOHFC administers programs designed to support their mandate.

In this context and under the general supervision of a manager, the position will:

• Assist in research projects to determine and provide advice on improving NOHFC program delivery and services, including data integrity, quality control, and optimized business process mapping; identifying and obtaining economic/statistical data and other relevant information; performing literature reviews; conducting client surveys; and analyzing data to identify and recommend policy and program enhancements;
• Participate on project and/or work teams in the planning, co-ordination and development of detailed program evaluation;
• Participate in the development of standards, processes, methods, techniques and performance measures;
• Assist in the research and development of programs and policies to advance the government's agenda in bringing emerging and strategic new sectors to maturity to further support Northern economic prosperity;
• Accompany Manager or other staff to inter-ministerial, inter-governmental, committee meetings.

Staffing and Licensing :

Must have graduated from a college or university, with a degree, diploma or post-graduate certificate, within the past 5 years.

Must be an Indigenous person (i.e. First Nations, Métis, Inuit).

Knowledge :

The position requires knowledge of:

• Research techniques, data analysis and evaluative methods/techniques, to conduct research, analyze and compile information/data.
• Project management theories and methodologies, to assist in the planning and implementation of project activities relating to NOHFC programs and policies.

This internship offers exposure to a mix of economic development opportunities across a variety of strategic sectors. The intern will gain the ability to:

• Undertake client surveys and program reviews;
• Map business processes to create efficiencies in program delivery;
• Knowledge of strategic and operational planning processes;
• Understanding of the northern economy, community needs, resources and readiness, and where sector expansion/development should occur to maximize impact to sector and Northern Ontario prosperity.

Skills :

The position requires:

• Project Management Skills - to plan, coordinate and manage deliverables as described in the initiatives above.
• Reasoning and Evaluative Skills - to evaluate survey results and business processes;
• Research and Analytical Skills - to assist in conducting research, information collection and to analyse the program data; problem solving skills - to identify process or service delivery problems;
• Communication skills - to assist with the development of surveys, articulate research findings, prepare presentations and work with team members;
• Knowledge of software such as Word, Outlook, Excel to prepare written reports, spreadsheets, presentation packages and correspondence


The intern will work closely with senior staff and attend a board of director meeting to gain an appreciation for government decision making. The intern will also be provided the opportunity to attend stakeholder events for networking purposes.

Freedom of Action :

Acts under the general supervision of the Manager and performs day-to-day functions with relative freedom/independence. Work is performed within the broad framework of overall policies, guidelines, procedures and NOHFC's business goals and objectives for modernization.

Errors in recommendations made to the Manager and ineffective information research and analyses could result in inaccurate and incomplete information and affect project goals and decisions made by the NOHFC and impact NOHFC clients.

Contacts are internal and external, including other OPS ministries, to conduct research; participate in committees/working groups; provide, obtain and share information.
