Purpose of Position :

Provide support in the planning and delivery of the district resource management and land use planning initiatives. Provide support in the design and implementation of biological surveys; and the collection, management, analysis and reporting of information to support fish, wildlife, and ecosystem management. Provide biological knowledge and advice to support aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems management.

Duties / Responsibilities :


Under the general supervision of the Sault Ste. Marie Resource Management Supervisor, and professional direction of the District Management Biologist:

1. Design and perform scientifically sound and comprehensive studies and surveys (e.g. lakes and rivers, wetlands, wildlife habitat, stick nests, aerial wildlife surveys), analyze and interpret data; and prepare reports and recommendations (e.g. fisheries assessments).

2. Conduct field work in a variety of ecosystems and under all types of weather conditions.



3. Provide biological knowledge and advice on the ecology and management of aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems to the district team, clients and the public.

4. Reviewing and providing input to development proposals and applications associated authorizations under various legislation (e.g. Public Lands Act, Fish and Wildlife Conservation Act).

5. Attending and actively participating in meetings and other sessions with government agencies, stakeholder groups, organizations and the general public on fish and wildlife management initiatives (i.e. Local Citizen's Committees, Fish and Game Clubs).

6. Learning the Ministry's legislation, regulation and policy framework as they relate to natural resource management and planning.

7. The incumbent shall, while in the workplace, conduct themselves in compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations, and any workplace procedures or practices as directed by their immediate supervisor; report any hazards of which they are aware to their immediate supervisor; and report all work related injuries and illnesses to their immediate supervisor.

Staffing and Licensing :

Valid Ontario Drivers Licence. Valid First Aid Certificate or ability to obtain.

Knowledge :


Knowledge of biological and ecological theories, principles, and practices as they relate to natural resource management.

Knowledge of inventory, monitoring, and assessment techniques related to aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems, wetlands, fish and wildlife, water quality, and other biological values.

Knowledge of field identification of the ecosystems, flora, and fauna of Northeastern Ontario, with an emphasis on fish identification.

Knowledge of and ability to use personal computers, internet, email and a variety of software applications (e.g. MS Word, MS Excel, MS Power Point, and ArcGIS) to prepare correspondence, presentations, reports, etc. and to analyze/verify survey data.

Working knowledge of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Global Positioning Systems (GPS).

Ability to function as a team member in a multi-disciplinary environment. Knowledge of worker responsibilities as outlined in the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations.

Freedom of Action :

Position works under the general supervision of Resource Management Supervisor and day to day direction of the District Management Biologist.

Work is guided by Ministry and government legislation, policies, standards and priorities and performed in accordance with established methods and practical procedures.

Job contributes to decision-making about priorities and major tasks in consultation with the District Management Biologist.

Work is reviewed for general accuracy and adequacy.

Situations not covered by established methods and practical procedures are referred to supervisor.
