Purpose of Position :

To provide general maintenance assistance including but not limited to: snow removal, cleaning, composting, waste removal, gardening, grounds keeping, animal care, event/tent set up, painting, drywall repairs, general maintenance and/or repair of the buildings, grounds, vessels and equipment, of Huronia Historical Parks at the Sainte-Marie among the Hurons and Discovery Harbour heritage tourist attractions.

Duties / Responsibilities :

Under the direction of the Manager, Operations
1. Assists the maintenance team with the maintenance and/or repair of the buildings, grounds and equipment at one or both sites as required including, but not limited to painting, drywall repairs, basic plumbing and electrical work, maintenance of mechanical equipment and tools, oil changes, basic carpentry and masonry work, grounds keeping (i.e. grass cutting, snow removal, tree pruning, etc.), waste removal, pest control, housekeeping, vessel repair and general maintenance. Assists in setting up tents, picnic tables, portable toilets, etc. for events. Opens buildings and operates security monitoring equipment as required.

2. Assists in cleaning and disinfecting washrooms / locker rooms / showers /change rooms/public and staff areas; mopping; damp dusting; cleaning windows, sweeping walkways and stairwells, vacuuming. etc. Collecting garbage, recycling and taking to disposal area

3. Assists in agricultural work by providing animal care for historic site livestock (e.g. cows, pigs, chickens) by, handling, feeding, maintaining and cleaning of all animal areas (i.e. barn/stable, chicken coop, pigpen, etc.) Assists in providing historic and modern gardens services such as; planting/transplanting, watering, cultivating, fertilizing, pruning, weeding,
pest control (insect and animal); composting and harvesting,

4. Operates vehicles and equipment including but not limited to: tractors, trucks, utility vehicles, loaders, leaf blowers, line trimmers, lawn mowers, chain saws, and snow blowers.

5. Purchases goods using ministry purchasing card and/or petty cash, provides delivery and pick up services as required. Maintains records and reconciles purchases according to ministry guidelines. Basic computer use and knowledge of Microsoft Office and internet to communicate via email, perform attendance functions, etc. This position requires weekend and/or evening work. Hours may fluctuate based on the timing of special events and programs.

6. Provides direction to summer students and liaises with contractors as required

7. Ensures all related work and activities are performed in accordance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act. Attends and participates in meetings and training as required.

8. The Manager has the right to assign additional responsibilities

9. Requires valid Ontario class G driver's license to drive between sites and perform errands

Staffing and Licensing :

Valid Class "G" Driver's License.

Knowledge :

Job requires knowledge of general maintenance techniques to assist the maintenance team with the upkeep and repair of buildings, grounds, equipment and tools.

Job requires basic knowledge of cleaning techniques, supplies and equipment.

Job requires basic knowledge of techniques used in the agricultural/horticultural field in order to assist in the planting, growing, maintenance and harvesting of historic and modern gardens including various herbs, vegetables, shrubs and flowers.

Job requires knowledge of general animal husbandry (feeding, grooming, watering, and cleaning) for cattle, pigs and chickens to ensure the health and safety of the animals.

Job requires the basic knowledge of safe operation of vehicles and equipment such as trucks, utility vehicles, loaders and tractors and requires safe practices in the use and maintenance of tools including but not limited to roto-tillers, snow blowers, lawn maintenance equipment, hammers, chisels, handsaw to complete maintenance repair tasks.

Job requires knowledge of relevant sections of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and WHMIS

Basic oral communication and organizational skills to liaise with contractors and summer students, prioritize work demands under strict deadlines, and maintain complete and accurate records.

Skills :

Job requires skills to assist in performing basic carpentry, painting, masonry, fence construction , roofing, grounds keeping, lawn maintenance, repairing and maintenance of tools and equipment e.g. saws, planers, drills, etc.

Job requires skills to assist in performing minor mechanical repairs and maintenance to tractors, utility vehicles, line trimmers, lawn mowers and small machinery (IE oil changes, tire changes, blade sharpening, etc.).

Job requires skills to assist Ag Worker in crop rotation, planting/harvesting, fertilizing, weeding, watering, composting, pest control.

Job requires skills to assist in building and maintaining fences, flower beds, paddocks and pens. Job requires skills to assist in planting, cultivating and harvesting vegetables, herbs and flowers in modern and historic gardens.

Job requires skills to assist in providing general care to animals on the historic site.

Job requires skills to clean/sanitize public washrooms, vacuum, dust, tidy, and mop in cleaner's absence.

Job requires planning and organizational skills to organize and prioritize workload to ensure duties are performed within deadlines.

Job requires oral communication skills to discuss in detail work plans with a range of other staff and workers.

Job requires basic computer skills and knowledge of Microsoft Office and Internet to communicate via email, perform attendance functions, etc.

Freedom of Action :

Job requires selecting correct methods of repair and tools required when assisting in performing carpentry, painting masonry and maintenance work. Job requires working in accordance with established practices and procedures of the agricultural/horticultural trade to assist in maintaining gardens. Job requires selecting correct cleaning products and equipment to maintain the cleanliness of the tourist attractions during the operational vs non- operational seasons. Job requires identifying maintenance issues and making recommendations to the Maintenance team and The Manager, Operations. Job requires sensitivity to the tourist attractions' "visitor first philosophy" and modifying some work activities accordingly. Work is reviewed or monitored for progress and results.
