Purpose of Position :

As a member of the Turkey Point Provincial Park Cluster team, under the general supervision of the Park
Superintendent - Turkey Point PP, and Assistant Park Superintendent, and group leadership of the
Senior Operations Technician, to carry out a variety of technical duties, program responsibilities, and
group leadership associated with park maintenance, facility sanitation, water treatment, security, visitor
registration, orientation and the park enforcement programs within Selkirk Provincial Park.

Duties / Responsibilities :

Provides technical, operational, monitoring, and group leadership duties for the successful
implementation of the park operating program by:
• carrying out routine facility/equipment inspections to maintain their security, identify/minimize
damage and to ensure their normal operations;
• acting upon, reporting/recording problems, violations and complaints to the park duty officer;
• providing general park maintenance functions by carrying out routine maintenance duties (i.e.
lawn mowing, painting, minor repairs/maintenance to buildings/utilities, garbage collections,
grounds/campsites/trails maintenance, general facility maintenance, etc.:
• operate a water treatment facility to ensure compliance with policies, regulations, and legislation;
• cleaning park facilities such as comfort stations, vault toilets, shower buildings, laundry rooms,
picnic shelters, campsites and fireplaces;
• operating light powered equipment (i.e. lawn mowers, chainsaws, wood-chippers, boats, small
hand tools, etc.) and other equipment such as tractor with backhoe attachment and one-ton truck
with trailer, etc.
• processing and issuing permits, reservations, licenses and the sale of publications and
associated park promotional items, including the registration of park users and reporting of
revenues via the computerized campground information system (CAMIS);
• collecting fees, accounting for and recording of cash received and credit card transactions;
• reconciling and ensuring security of cash, cash floats, permits, licenses, publications, etc.;
• developing and maintaining effective public relations by providing visitor information/assistance
and orientation to park programs, hazards, and the benefits of wise use of park resources
according to park policies, practices and regulations;
• providing group leadership and training to approximately 10 regular staff assigned;
• working in compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and its Regulations and any
workplace practices as directed by the employer;
• ensuring that workers take precautions to protect the health and safety of themselves and others
by complying with such acts, codes, policies, procedures or accepted workplace practices as may
be appropriate;
• advising workers of actual and potential dangers in the workplace and the required precautions; .
Provides enforcement duties by:
• promoting user compliance with park rules and regulations through public contact and
routine/non-routine patrols;
• enforcing provincial statutes and regulations (i.e. Provincial Parks and Conservation Reserves
Act, Liquor License Act, Highway Traffic Act, etc.);
• documenting warnings, laying Charges, issuing appearance notices and summary conviction
tickets as required, and attending court as required;
• maintaining an accurate and detailed record of all enforcement activities/occurrences, compiling
occurrence reports, and preparing seized items for disposal;
• acting as duty officer as scheduled.

Performs other related duties such as:
• assisting other members of the Park team during vacation/sickness and other peak workload
periods;
• assisting in other Ministry program areas as required.

Staffing and Licencing :

• Ability to be designated as a Park Warden and meet ministry certification criteria and standards in
use of force.
• Valid Limited Subsystem Water Treatment Certificate or ability to obtain.
• Valid Emergency First Aid Certificate.
• Valid Class 'G' Driver's Licence

Knowledge :

• Working knowledge of resource management principles and techniques as they apply to parks as
well as relevant acts, regulations, policies, procedures and guidelines.
• Good working knowledge of park programs, services and operating regulations.
• Working knowledge of grounds keeping, general building and utility maintenance. Basic
knowledge of cleaning equipment, materials and methods.
• Good working knowledge of camping and practices/techniques of outdoor living.
• Knowledge of and ability to use personal computers including word-processing, record-keeping,
internet, e-mail and various corporate software programs (i.e. CAMIS).

Skills :

• Working knowledge of and skills in the operation and maintenance of a variety of office
equipment and light powered equipment such as lawn mowers, chainsaws, wood-chippers, boats,
small hand tools, etc. and other equipment such as tractor with backhoe attachment and one-ton
truck with trailer.
• Good group leadership, organizational, mathematical, cash-handling, interpersonal and oral and
written communication skills.
• Knowledge of and ability to use personal computers including word-processing, record-keeping,
internet, e-mail and various corporate software programs (i.e. CAMIS).
• Ability to drive standard transmission vehicles

Freedom of Action :

• Job requires working within the procedural controls of park management policies, procedures and
bulletins, Park Management Plans, provincial operating standards, and provincial and federal
legislation, such as Provincial Parks Act with minimal supervision
• Job requires dealing with issues/problems independently in terms of law enforcement,
maintenance issues, group leadership, work programs and in negotiating with park users to
facilitate compliance with park policies
