The Ministry of the Environment, Air Policy Instruments and Program Design Branch seeks a creative individual to participate in and support the development of legislation, regulations, policies and programs related to provincial air quality and climate change in Ontario.

About the job

In this role, you will:
• lead, participate on or provide support to a variety of project teams
• provide analysis on the need for revised and new policy development within provincial, national and global contexts
• conduct research and analytical projects and studies in support of air quality and climate change initiatives
• establish and develop relationships with key internal and external air quality, climate change and policy stakeholders
• participate in related implementation and transition activities, planning and policy development
• devise performance measures and indicators to monitor the success of air quality and climate change policy and programs
• examine, assess and provide input to policy and program planning proposals

Recent work done from one of these positions assessed the potential for increased use of biomass and other renewable alternative fuels in energy-intense industry sectors and associated changes in lifecycle environmental emissions. Policy barriers and enabling policy instruments were also assessed.

Other recent work: assessed regulatory approaches used in other jurisdictions across North America and compared applicability to Ontario policy objectives; and drafted policy submissions and postings for the Environmental and Ontario Regulatory Registry and analysed public responses to postings.

• You have knowledge of existing environmental regulations and new policy directions
• You have knowledge of legislative processes regarding air quality and climate change
• You have knowledge of the government decision-making processes
• You have knowledge of environmental theories, practices and strategies regarding air quality and climate change issues

Essential Skills

You have skills in research and analysis techniques to gather, assess and evaluate information in support of policy and program initiatives
• You have communications, presentation and consultation skills to deal effectively with internal and external stakeholders
• You have skills in the use of spreadsheet, internet research tools, database management, word processing, and presentation graphics and other relevant software
