The Ministry of the Attorney General is seeking a Deputy Director to assist the Legal Director in the management and provision of Legal Services to the Ministry of Infrastructure, Ministry of Energy, Ministry of Economic Development and Growth, Ministry of Research Innovation and Science, Small Business and Accessibility.

Duties will include:
• Reporting to the Legal Director, you will work as a key member of a legal management team with the Director, two other Deputy Directors and the Office Manager to provide strategic direction and operational management of this legal branch as it serves its broad base of clients
• Working with branch lawyers, the Legal Director, Deputy Directors and other Ministry of the Attorney General colleagues, provide expert legal advice and legal services to the client Ministries
• Leading legal teams in support of clients' initiatives
• Supervising lawyers' work to ensure high quality legal advice, for compliance with quality assurance standards, and office policies and procedures. Review legal opinions and other work products produced by lawyers in the branch
• Mentoring counsel and working collaboratively with counsel on high profile or complex issues, as required
• Ensuring timely and accurate identification and management of critical issues and communications
• Assisting with the strategic and operational planning for the branch, human resources planning and performance management for lawyers as well as other human resources matters
• Participating in budget development and review, including allocations and forecasting and corporate initiatives with respect to legal resources and services
• Facilitating formal and informal communication and linkages with clients at all levels of the Ministries, the Ministry of the Attorney General colleagues and other internal/external partners and stakeholders
• Acting as Director in the Director's absence and as the Director's designate at ministerial committees/meetings

Knowledge and Skills
• Ability to support and motivate an experienced legal staff with varied expertise, bringing experience in building strong and agile teams
• Demonstrated corporation/commercial, business or regulatory law experience, including experience in leading legislative processes and facilitating policy development, delivering on complex files, leading negotiations, or managing drafting projects
• Proven judgment and political acuity with a solution-oriented disposition
• Proven ability to produce high-quality work under tight deadlines with changing and competing demands and a high degree of uncertainty
• Experience leading issues management and resolution on high profile, complicated and contentious issues
• Experience in strategic and operational planning
• Demonstrated ability to take initiative and determine next steps without a high degree of direction
• A track record of responsiveness to and ability to anticipate client needs
• Demonstrated management/leadership experience, including performance planning, performance management and succession planning
• Knowledge of principles, policies, processes and procedures related to financial management and budgeting
