About the job
• The Biologist Intern will contribute to the delivery of fundamental business needs for Ontario Parks, Northeast Zone. These include:
o Acquisition, management, and analysis of Natural Heritage Information.
o Assist the ecologists, planners, and protected area staff with the collection, management, and analysis of background information pertaining to provincial parks. This could include written information and spatial data regarding land cover, vegetation, habitat, geology, wildlife, species at risk, cultural heritage, and other values.
o Assist with field inventory or monitoring of natural heritage features and values of protected areas as required.
• Transfer or application of science and information to the development, review, or implementation of strategies, management plans, and resource stewardship activities.
o Participate in the transfer of knowledge and applied science to park managers, planners, and stewards, as required.
o Become familiar with the Ministry's biodiversity conservation mandate, particularly with the protection objective for provincial parks.
o Assist with the preparation of environmental assessments for projects proposed in provincial parks.
o Assist with the preparation of implementation plans for priority stewardship or rehabilitation activities in provincial parks.
• Attend training opportunities on the protection objective and other relevant resource management topics, as directed by the Zone Ecologist and Zone Manager.
• Participate on relevant project teams to help establish objectives, transfer information, and report on progress.
What you bring to the team
Knowledge
• Knowledge of biology and principles of ecology, including ecosystem composition, classification, structure, and function, conservation biology, and the natural sciences is required;
• Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work independently or within a multi-disciplinary team and with clients and partners is required;
• Ability for frequent travel to other work locations in Ontario is required;
• Ability to work safely in remote locations and wilderness settings is required;
• Valid Ontario Driver's License or equivalent is required;
• Knowledge of worker responsibilities as outlined in the Occupational Health and Safety Act is required;
• Familiarity with protected area planning at the system and individual protected area levels is an asset;
• Demonstrated knowledge of Provincial Parks & Conservation Reserves Act, regulations and policy is an asset;
• Demonstrated knowledge of the Endangered Species Act and related regulations is an asset.Analytical and Research Skills
• Strong communications skills, both oral and written are required.
• Training or experience in natural resource inventory, monitoring, and assessment techniques with regard to natural landscapes, vegetation, wildlife habitat, geology, water, or other values is required.
• Well-developed analytical and research skills are an asset.Computer Skills
• Working knowledge of standard computer software packages including MS-Excel, MS Word is required.
• Working knowledge of geographic information systems, Microsoft Access are assets.Eligibility

• Has graduated or will graduate from an approved or legally authorized college or university with a degree, postgraduate certificate or diploma within the last four years;
• Candidates are only eligible to participate in one MNRF 18-month placement and must not have participated in the MNRF internship program in the past.
