If so, consider this challenging opportunity as a Fish and Wildlife Technical Specialist with the Regional Operations Division at the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry.

About the job

You will:

• administer fish and wildlife, and species at risk license and permit processes
• participate in work program activities including preparing recommendations, organizing and implementing field projects, controlling budget expenditures and monitoring progress and results of projects
• provide technical expertise and group leadership through consultation, negotiations and conflict resolution
• prepare and implement compliance plans, conduct field inspections and investigations and provide testimonial evidence in court
• support long range planning teams by providing technical expertise
• communicate fish and wildlife program information to the public, clients, partners, resource industries and Aboriginal peoples
• participate in the delivery of other district resource management programs (e.g., Lands and Waters, Aggregate, Forest)

What you bring to the team

Mandatory requirement:

• You must have a valid class 'G' driver's license or equivalent as recognized by the Province of Ontario and the ability to travel within the service area.

Fish and wildlife expertise and technical knowledge:

• You have in depth working knowledge of fish and wildlife legislation (e.g. Fish and Wildlife Conservation Act, Federal Fisheries Act) and general knowledge of forest, lands, waters, and aggregate resources related legislation, policies, procedures and guidelines in order to review and process licences, authorizations and permits and to ensure resource operations are in compliance with ecological sustainability standards and legal requirements.
• You have expertise and technical knowledge of fish and wildlife program and project activities in order to participate in resource management planning processes to plan, organize and conduct field projects and programs and to provide technical leadership, advice and training to staff, resource industries, clients, interest groups and the public.
• You have proven knowledge of compliance and inspection procedures to conduct, or participate in, operational audits/inspections of resource industries/users by determining compliance with operating approvals, determining corrective actions and providing technical information and evidence.
• You have knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and are able to comply with such acts, codes, policy, procedures and regulations to ensure that health and safety precautions are taken by all parties.

Communication, interpersonal and collaboration skills:

• You have outstanding interpersonal and collaboration skills to effectively work with internal and external stakeholders, facilitate presentations and participate in public consultation processes as a ministry representative.
• You demonstrate advanced oral and written communication skills to respond to public inquiries, prepare briefing notes, draft Minister's letters, press releases and write technical reports.
• You demonstrate tact and diplomacy and excellent decision making skills in your interactions with industry stakeholders and the general public to achieve consensus and facilitate resolutions.

Problem-solving and analytical skills:

• You demonstrate excellent evaluation, interpretation, assessment and problem-solving skills to technically review, analyze and present data and evaluate information from staff and resource industries in order to confirm adherence to legislation/policy; identify resource sustainability and/or compliance issues; and recommend management, allocation and compliance actions to ensure effectiveness application of fish and wildlife program activities.
• You are able to work independently while demonstrating political acuity and sound judgement when analyzing data to effectively resolve disputes and recommend solutions.

Planning and coordination skills:

• You have strong planning and coordinating skills to plan, lead and coordinate fish and wildlife programs/projects and to ensure the timely review, assessment, approval and audit of ministry, individual/business and agency projects, initiatives, proposals, licences, permits and plans.
• You demonstrate good organizational and time-management skills to be able to coordinate several processes/projects occurring simultaneously.
• You have demonstrated ability to apply your project management skills to plan and coordinate project expenditures, and make decisions on resource management programs by identifying standards, establish resource needs, production targets, and arrange for the programs to be monitored and/or evaluated.

Computer skills:

• You are proficient in the use of personal computers/software including word-processing, data base, electronic mail, internet and spreadsheet applications to prepare correspondence and reports; input and retrieve data; prepare budgets and track expenditures.

Language requirements and assessment:
