Are you an experienced food service professional? If so, consider bringing your culinary expertise to the Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Services, North Bay Jail where you will prepare, cook and assemble standard and special diet meals in a conventional institutional kitchen.

About the job

In this role you will:
• Provide team leadership within the cooking operation for the correctional institution
• Provide direction and support to inmate helpers
• Prepare and assemble meals
• Maintain an inventory of supplies
• Ensure the safety and security of helpers, staff and equipment
• Maintain proper sanitary conditions in the kitchen area

What you bring to the team


Mandatory requirements

You must have:
• possession of Journeyman Chef's Certificate as issued by the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities OR sufficient acceptable experience in volume cooking
• valid First Aid and Heartsaver Certificate or the ability to obtain
• ability to work weekends, and holidays

Technical Knowledge and Skills:

• Large volume cooking and baking principles
• Standard cooking and food preparation
• Food storage procedures and methods
• Portion control standards and the proper use of kitchen equipment and tools
• Food safety practices

Other Essential Skills:

Your skills and abilities will include:

• Team leadership skills to provide instruction to subordinate helpers
• Communication skills, tact and diplomacy to work with ministry staff, inmate helpers and service providers
• Analytical and problem-solving skills to identify and assess workplace hazards, equipment malfunctions and food service issues
• Ability to acquire and apply knowledge of relevant legislation (i.e. Occupational Health and Safety Act, Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System)
• Written communication skills to prepare various reports
• Basic computer skills to input, track and record data
