Quinte Detention Centre, located in Napanee, Ontario, serves as a point of entry into the institutional system for individuals on remand, short term sentences and/or awaiting for transfer.

What can I expect to do in this role?

In this role, you will:

• Plan, develop and implement the social services program for the Centre
• Provide crisis intervention counselling and rehabilitative services to inmates and young offenders
• Prepare assessments, identify needs and recommend treatment and/or other professional intervention services
• Provide discharge planning services
• Evaluate counselling standards and review decisions
• Provide consultation and resources to institutional staff
• Provide supervision to staff, assign work, coordinate training and provide input on performance evaluations

How do I qualify?

Mandatory

• You are currently registered as a Social Worker in good standing with the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers

Specialized Knowledge and Experience

• You have knowledge of professional social work theories, practices and procedures normally acquired through a Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) or Master of Social Work (MSW)
• You have experience in the planning and implementation of social services, rehabilitative programs and treatment
• You have experience in facilitating groups, and providing individual and crisis intervention counselling
• You have knowledge of community supports services to assist offenders with re-integration planning
• You have knowledge of assessment tools (i.e., risk, mental health, etc.)
• You can interpret and apply relevant legislation, operational policies and procedures

Team Leadership and Supervisory Skills

• You can provide supervision to staff, assign work, assess workload, and ensure work meets client needs and institutional requirements
• You can coordinate training programs and assess performance

Communication and Interpersonal Skills

• You can establish contacts and promote good relationships with outside agencies and community resources
• You demonstrate tact, discretion and sensitivity, and you can engage, motivate, counsel and advocate on behalf of inmates
• You have strong writing skills to prepare reports and assessments
• You can work effectively within a multi-disciplinary setting and provide consultation to staff and inmates

Analytical, Assessment and Problem Solving Skills

• You can provide professional guidance in difficult or complex cases
• You can assess inmates in crisis and apply appropriate intervention
• You can gather and compile data from multiple sources to identify inmate needs, and develop or modify rehabilitative, treatment and case management plans

Organizational and Computer Skills

• You can manage conflicting priorities, meet deadlines and maintain adequate records
• You are proficient with computer software and database systems to input and retrieve inmate data, prepare reports, and maintain case documentation and statistics
