Fort William Historical Park, within the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Sport has this exciting opportunity to interpret the role and significance of the Armourer/Blacksmith within the context of Fort William Historical Park's living history, education, events and exhibits program. This exciting role will allow you to research and fabricate period reproductions and provide specialized maintenance services for site structures and furnishings.

About the job

In this role, you will:

• Develop and implement period Armourer/Blacksmith interpretive, education and event programming using living history techniques and applications
• Develop and implement education programs in accordance with core curriculum documents and consultation with the education community
• Serve as a resource in the implementation of living history Armourer/Blacksmith work
• Participate in historical dramatizations, pageants, festivals, special events, daily activities, education and outreach programs
• Create and maintain black powder firearms and period ironware items
• Conduct on-going repair and restoration of existing historic structures and exhibits.

What you bring to the team


Mandatory requirements

• You have a Class G Ontario Driver's Licence to perform outreach education programs
• You have the ability to obtain and maintain a valid firearms certification

Specialized Knowledge:

• You have knowledge of period and contemporary blacksmithing, silversmithing, gunsmithing and black powder use
• You have knowledge of theoretical and applied Armourer/Blacksmithing methods, techniques, materials, construction and tools
• You have knowledge of interpretive applications and applied living history techniques to dramatize and portray historical characters and events, and present educational workshops to staff and the public
• You have knowledge of the Ontario school curriculum pertaining to the role played by the Armourer/Blacksmith in the early 1800's

Technical Skills:

• You have Armourer/Blacksmith skills such as shaping, forging, welding, hardening and tempering metal
• You have skills in employing contemporary welding techniques; using period and contemporary tools and machines
• You can create and maintain black powder firearms and period ironware items

Legislation Knowledge:

• You have knowledge of Explosive's Act of Canada, Firearms Legislation, Occupational Health and Safety Legislation, City of Thunder Bay By-Laws and the Transportation of Dangerous Goods Act

Planning, Organizational and Communication Skills:

• You have planning and organizational skills to plan and organize Armourer/Blacksmith duties performed
• You can coordinate activities of seasonal staff
• You have oral communication skills to interact with visitors and participate in interpretive demonstrations

Computer Skills:

• You have computer skills to prepare statistical reports, and program outlines
