If so, picture yourself as a Recreation Officer joining the Team at Roy McMurtry Youth Centre where you will plan, organize, implement and evaluate a balanced program of physical, social, cultural and leisure activities for the facility.
About the job
As a recreation officer, you will:
• plan, organize, coordinate and manage a balanced therapeutic recreation program of physical, social, cultural and leisure time to meet the individual needs, interests and abilities of the youth, including facilitating recreational events;
• maintain order and security through relationship custody and dynamic security practices;
• anticipate, de-escalate and defuse potentially hostile situations;
• give directions in an appropriate manner and develop successful relationships with youth, staff and the community;
• contribute to case management, evaluate progress of youth and of programs and provide counsel to youth to motivate and encourage positive responses and participation.

Mandatory requirements
• Current First Aid and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation Heartsaver Certificates with AED.
Leadership and Analytical Skills:
•You have demonstrated administrative, analytical/problem-solving, leadership and team building and organizational skills:
-to participate in the planning and design of recreation programs for male and female youth
-to organize and implement a variety of recreational activities involving staff, community groups, agencies and volunteers
-to lead/supervise and evaluate the performance of youth and contribute to the case management process.
Communication, Computer and Coaching skills:
•You have demonstrated interpersonal and communication skills:
-to write formal and informal reports, give appropriate direction and develop successful relationships with youth, staff, and community
-to participate in the case management process
-to provide training, instruction and demonstrations in recreational activities.
•You utilize your knowledge of and ability to use computers and related software to produce recreational activity schedules, prepare reports and use internal email system.
•You have knowledge of interviewing, coaching/counselling skills and motivation techniques to counsel, supervise and encourage participation of male and female youth in recreational activities, ensure custody and control of participating youth and to anticipate, de-escalate and defuse any potentially hostile situations.
Recreation Knowledge:
•You use your knowledge of the theories, principles and rules of recreation activities for male and female youth to instruct and guide participants in physical, social, cultural and/or educational recreation activities and to manage a varied recreation program
•You utilize your recreation programming ability and experience to plan, design, organize and facilitate recreational activities and events and evaluate recreational services
•You have knowledge of/ability to learn Ministry statement of youth justice mission, principles, policies, vision/ goals, and relevant legislation (such as Human Rights Code, Ministry of Correctional Services Act, Youth Criminal Justice Act, Child and Family Services Act, Fire codes, Occupational Health and Safety Act) to maintain order and security through relationship custody and dynamic security practices.
