Bring your DNA lab research expertise to this exciting position with the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry.

What can I expect to do in this role?

In this role, you will:

• assist the Senior Genetics Technician with the operation and management of the genetics laboratory by organizing, scheduling and allocating lab workload and resources
• provide technical assistance to contract employees, students and collaborators
• train staff in standard laboratory procedures and in the safe operation and maintenance of lab equipment
• purchase equipment and maintain sufficient supplies
• develop and update lab Standard and Safe Operating Procedures, sample tracking logbooks and databases
• conduct lab work and data collection
• assist in the development, documentation and optimization of new laboratory techniques

How do I qualify?

Mandatory requirement:

• You must possess a valid class 'G' driver's licence or equivalent as recognized by the Province of Ontario.

Technical knowledge and skills:

• You possess thorough knowledge of DNA extraction, amplification, electrophoresis, sequencing, and microsatellite genotyping.
• You have demonstrated experience troubleshooting molecular genetics procedures.
• You have sound knowledge of laboratory methods used in wildlife and/or population genetics.
• You have knowledge of safe working practices around the laboratory use of hazardous chemicals and knowledge of worker responsibilities as outlined in the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations.

People and communication skills:

• You have proven interpersonal and communication skills to train and communicate with the public, staff and clients with tact and good judgment.
• You have written communication skills to prepare data summaries and reports.

Project management and analytical skills:

• You have strong project management skills to coordinate and implement several research projects at one time.
• You possess analytical and problem-solving skills to troubleshoot problems in the laboratory.

General skills:

• You can efficiently use personal computers for data storage and retrieval as well as have sound knowledge of data management principles and best practices.
• You have the ability to modify and adapt equipment and techniques for various phases of genetic work.
