The Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry would be interested in your knowledge and skills in a role that is unique and challenging.
About the job
In this role, you will:
• provide specialist structural engineering expertise, advice and project management services to support the development, review and revision of mass timber projects funded by or constructed by the government of Ontario, which could include timber bridges, mid-rise or tall mass timber buildings that fall outside acceptable solutions under Ontario's Building Code (i.e., under Alternative Solutions)
• maintain and update any technical guides or other products produced by the branch for the use of ministries, municipalities, or third parties
• provide expert advice for Ontario municipalities when receiving a request of Alternative Solution approval for tall wood projects
What you bring to the team
Mandatory requirements
• must be a Professional Engineer, licensed with the Professional Engineers Ontario (PEO)
• position requires as a minimum, a bachelor's degree in civil or structural engineering
• must have a valid Ontario class 'G' driver's licence as significant travel is required to visit communities across Ontario
Technical expertise:
• comprehensive technical expertise and knowledge of the theory, principles and practices of timber engineering in a broad range of new and emerging technologies, methods and systems for building design, construction and maintenance
• knowledge of building legislation, including Ontario's Building Code, regulations, policies and regulatory programs in other national and international jurisdictions
• knowledge of building sector stakeholders (e.g. municipalities, and organizations representing enforcement officials builders, designers and wood product manufacturers) in Ontario and related mass timber building technology issues that impact government Building Code policy
• strong working knowledge of the most current version of the Canadian Standards Association's CSA O86 ' 'Engineering Design in Wood' Standard, and also a working knowledge of CSA S6 ' Canadian Highway Bridge Design Code
Project management and planning skills:
• knowledge of project management principles, methodologies and practices to provide project management services for major, multiple (three or more) concurrent capital construction projects for a variety of ministries, ensuring quality work performance is completed on time and within budget
• planning and organizational skills to assist with program planning, target setting, budgeting, assigning work, logistical details, assess effects of in-year funding pressures and development of strategy(s) for dealing with pressures
Interpersonal and communication skills:
• communication and presentation skills to provide engineering expertise and advice, contribute to policy/strategy recommendations and deal with inquiries from staff, public and media and present results of investigations to various audiences
• ability to develop/prepare variety of materials (engineering reports, plans, tender proposals, training materials) and knowledge of technical editing and document publication techniques and methodologies
• interpersonal, negotiation and stakeholder relation skills to liaise and communicate with colleagues, consultants/contractors and external clients and negotiate resolution of issues/problems
Resource management and analytical skills:
• knowledge of resource management principles and best practices and an ability to gain a thorough understanding of the ministry's resource management/sustainability program objectives
• research and analytical skills to conduct technical engineering research; to review/develop policy and manage issues, and to provide technical support
Computer proficiency:
• knowledge of computer applications specific to engineering for planning, analyzing and managing projects and issuing approvals
• proficiency with common office productivity software, such as word processing, spreadsheets, project management, and presentation applications, to prepare technical reports, plans and training materials
