Bring your strong technical expertise and professional experience to the Building and Development Branch of the Ministry of Municipal Affairs, where you will apply your sound knowledge of engineering principles by providing technical advice on Ontario's Building Code, supporting the administration of the Code, and undertaking technical analysis and research on Code issues.

About the job

As the Building Code Advisor, Mechanical Specialist, you will:

• provide specialist engineering expertise and advice to support the development, review and revision of the Building Code Act, the Building Code and related regulations, standards and guidelines with a particular emphasis on provisions related to building mechanical systems and energy/water conservation;
• promote compliance and build capacity for the effective administration and enforcement of the Building Code by municipalities;
• provide engineering expertise and advice to the ministry, municipal enforcement officials and building sector associations on the Building Code and standards;
• support ministry statutory functions, including maintaining/updating the Building Code examination questions data base, and providing specialist engineering expertise to support the Building Code Commission and Building Materials Evaluation Commission, and for the development of the Minister's rulings.

What you bring to the team


Mandatory requirements

• You must be licensed by Professional Engineers Ontario (PEO) to practise professional engineering in Ontario.

Technical knowledge:

• You have comprehensive technical expertise and knowledge of the theory, principles and practices of engineering as they apply to building design, construction, renovation and maintenance, and with respect to new and emerging technologies.
• You have comprehensive knowledge of the theories and principles of engineering as they relate to the following: heating, ventilation and air conditioning (Building Code Part 6); plumbing (Part 7); on-site sewage (Part 8); and energy efficiency (Part 12).

Legislative knowledge:

• You have knowledge of legislation/policy development/analysis principles, methods, tools and strategies.
• You have knowledge of government/ministry corporate policy direction, the Building Code Act, the Building Code and related building legislation/codes/regulations/standards.
• You have knowledge of building legislation, regulations, policies and regulatory programs in other national and international jurisdictions.

Communication and consultative skills:

• You have political acuity and consultation skills to conduct/participate in engagement processes across the ministry/government and with external stakeholders and other jurisdictions.
• You can participate on committees and working groups involving other provincial ministries, other levels of government, standards setting bodies and building sector stakeholders.
• You have communication and presentation skills to provide engineering expertise and advice, prepare engineering reports, and contribute to policy/strategy recommendations.

Project management skills:

• You have the ability to plan and conduct assigned projects related to Building Code technical research, the development of Building legislative/program/policy recommendations and the development of Building Code implementation tools and technical supports.

Research, investigative and analytical skills:

• You have the proven ability to conduct technical engineering research that would support operational and technical policy review, development and issues management.
