The Office of the Employer Adviser (OEA) is looking for an Assistant General Counsel to join its team for a permanent opportunity.
About the job
Duties will include:
• Under the direction of the General Counsel, you will support client positions in proceedings before the Workplace Safety Insurance Board (WSIB) and Workplace Safety and Insurance Appeals Tribunal (WSIAT) hearings.
• You will assist in providing legal services in WSIAT hearings, and judicial reviews, and act as an intervenor on behalf of the OEA.
• You will assist in providing legal direction to Employer Specialists and Intake Advisors in their counsel and representation of clients under the direction of the General Counsel.
What you bring to the team
Mandatory requirements
• You must have a membership with the Law Society of Upper Canada and be entitled to practise law.
Legislative Knowledge & Legal Experience:
• You will have thorough knowledge of labour and administrative law, particularly the Workplace Safety and Insurance Act and associated Regulations.
• You have knowledge of the procedures of the WSIB and the WSIAT.
• You have knowledge of other relevant legislation such as the Human Rights Code, Labour Relations Act, Employment Standards Act, Freedom of Information, and Protection of Privacy Act and of employment law and labour-relations.
• You have previous experience in workplace safety and insurance gained through the practice of law, advocacy and/or academic employment.
Analytical, Research and Organizational Skills:
• You have the ability to conduct research and analyze, including, but not limited to statutes and case law.
• You have the ability to analyze policy and provide advice to agency staff regarding workplace safety and insurance.
• You have organizational skills to prepare materials for filing at the WSIB.
Communication Skills:
• You have demonstrated ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing to professional audiences and to provide assistance in drafting decisions.
• You have demonstrated ability to present legal arguments in court and to other administrative agencies.
• You have the ability to present seminars, speeches and discussions and to prepare and lead developmental activities for the staff of the OEA.
