We are seeking a results-driven communications professional to provide media relations leadership and expertise related to children and youth services.

This position will give you the opportunity to act as the official spokesperson of the Ministry of Children and Youth Services as well as plan, develop and coordinate a full range of media relations services.

What can I expect to do in this role?

In this position, you will:

• Act as the ministry's media spokesperson, including providing strategic advice and proposed responses.
• Provide media relations leadership and expertise in order to support the government's strategic direction.
• Monitor issues management and media relations results and processes to evaluate appropriateness/effectiveness.
• Provide strategic advice, counsel, communications and media expertise to the Minister, Minister's Office, Deputy Minister (or their staff), senior management and ministry partners.
• Develop working relationships with colleagues, senior staff, ministry's executive and central agencies

How do I qualify?

Media Relations Expertise:

• You have demonstrated media relations, journalism, communications, issues management theories, principles and practices to develop and recommend the overall media relations strategy, and plan for responses to media issues.
• You have experience guiding the development of strategic media relations campaigns, execution plans and products, and acting as media spokesperson.
• You have experience providing media relations expertise, briefings, training and support and coordinating media relations with multiple internal and external parties.

Technical Knowledge:

• You have knowledge of issues management and risk assessment/management methodologies and practices to develop effective media relations strategies and plans.
• You have knowledge of government and political decision-making and approvals processes and protocols, applicable legislation/regulations, processes and procedures; and relevant ministry policies, programs, and priorities.
• You have knowledge of policy development, legislative and political decision-making processes.
• You have demonstrated project management experience to lead and coordinate all phases of media relations related projects.

Communication Skills:

• You have experience providing briefings to staff on ministry policies or programs, and providing training, coaching and mentoring on media relations techniques.
• You have demonstrated experience developing communications plans, news releases, issues management strategies and a range of reports and briefing notes using computer software applications.
• You have relationship management skills to develop and maintain strong, collaborative working relationships with various partners, stakeholders and staff.
• You have experience providing technical direction, guidance and training to branch/unit employees and negotiating agreements between stakeholders.
• You have political acuity to liaise with executives and their offices, and management and staff of the Minister's Office, and Deputy Minister's Office.

Research and Analytical Skills:

• You have proven experience conducting research on issues and trends, analyzing their media impact, and proposing a course of action.
• You are able to identify media exposure opportunities, provide advice on strategies and initiatives to promote ministry activities and initiatives, resolve media relations challenges, and advise on contentious media enquiries.
• You have the ability to act as the ministry spokesperson to provide accurate and timely responses to media inquiries and to position the ministry positively with the media and media organizations.
• You have experience managing contentious and sometimes politically sensitive media issues and recommending strategic responses.

Leadership and Project Management Skills

• You can lead projects and project teams.
• You have experience planning, implementing, monitoring and evaluating communications projects.
