About the job
You will:
• carry out moderate to highly complex and/or specialty analysis/testing, to coordinate workload within the unit/group and for themselves, and to
provide leadership to technologists involved in the preparation and analysis of organic pollutants in a variety of sample media in support of
environmental programs, including monitoring, emergency response and litigation.
• implement new/improved methods for the preparation, analysis and/or reporting of sample analysis for a variety of parameters.
• provide a range of technical services including trouble-shooting and maintenance of equipment and workload coordination/monitoring to ensure turn-around times are met.
What you bring to the team
Knowledge of Laboratory Experience
• You have demonstrated knowledge of organic analytical chemistry and associated fields related to the preparation and analysis of a variety of sample matrices, including advanced sample preparation and analytical techniques in order to select the correct procedures and conditions for analysis and method development.
• You have current knowledge of the development, commissioning, maintenance, modification and repair of automated analytical laboratory systems and/or instruments (e.g. GC, GCMS, GCxGC, GCMSMS) for the
analysis of toxic organic compounds in environmental samples, including computers and software used to ensure equipment operates correctly with minimum downtime.
• You have demonstrated knowledge of laboratory operations to plan workday to achieve results within defined time limits to meet the Branch's production workload objectives.
• You have demonstrated knowledge of the principles of quality control and assurance, including ISO/IEC 17025 and recorded information management, and application software (e.g. statistic applications, spreadsheet functions, and word processing) to summarize performance histories, ensure the reliability of test results and to ensure adequacy of quality control activities.
Information Laboratory Equipment and Systems Experience
• You have demonstrated knowledge of information management systems and their relationship to laboratory data processing to ensure that data are correctly stored in the database or hardcopy, retrieve records, and transmit to clients.
• You have knowledge of computer skills to manipulate data, word process, develop and implement spreadsheets, develop and give presentations. access the internet, and email.
Legislative Knowledge
• You have demonstrated knowledge of relevant environmental legislation, including international and national legislation/regulations (e.g. Environmental Protection Act, Safe Drinking Water Act) to assess and ensure compliance and to determine samples that exceed standards and guidelines.
• You have demonstrated knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and regulations that apply to the work, e.g. Workplace Hazardous Material Information System (WHMIS) and Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS), and knowledge of any potential or actual danger to health or safety in the workplace.
Project Management Skills
• You have project management skills to ensure method development projects are successfully completed within a specified period of time.
Analytical, Evaluative and Organizational Skills
• You have knowledge of and the ability to apply statistics to evaluate viability of new analytical methods.
• You have interpretive and evaluation skills to assess data quality against established criteria or in the absence of established criteria against
accepted scientific principles.
• You have demonstrated organization skills to schedule and prioritize work; ensuring work assignments are completed accurately and efficiently; to store, find and retrieve analytical records electronically and in hard copy.
Communication, Interpersonal and Organizational Skills
• You have demonstrated interpersonal skills to provide guidance, oversee work of junior staff and to establish effective working relationships with scientific, technical, administrative, management, other co-workers and a diverse customer community.
• You have demonstrated effective oral and written communication skills to provide guidance to technologists and clients; to prepare client reports and document methods; to provide factual testimony as to accuracy and precision of results, technology functions, limitations and other qualities in court during legal proceedings; to train others; to author and present technical findings.
