The Ministry of the Attorney General seeks motivated and organized individuals to provide a range of legal secretarial services for the Crown Attorney's office.

About the job

In this role, you will:
• prepare correspondence and legal documents
• provide telephone and counter reception service
• prepare and distribute disclosure materials
• schedule pre-trial hearings
• maintain and track Crown briefs
• photocopy, fax and perform other duties as required

What you bring to the team


Mandatory requirements

• You can type 50 words per minute
• You can perform dicta to Ministry standards (70%)
• You have advanced oral and written French language skills

Technical Knowledge and Experience:

You have:
• the ability to acquire and interpret the rules and regulations of the legal office and court procedures in order to prepare various legal documents and answer any inquiries by providing factual explanations of administrative policies and procedures
• knowledge of legal terminology to transcribe or compose correspondence from oral instruction
• established experience in secretarial and administrative office procedures
• knowledge of basic accounting practices to calculate and process travel claims, invoices, and expense

Interpersonal, Communication and Judgment Skills:

You have:
• demonstrated interpersonal and oral communication skills in order to use appropriate legal terminology when providing information to legal professionals, police, media, court staff and the general public
• demonstrated written communication skills to prepare legal documents from precedents or information provided by Crown(s)
• the ability to respond to issues such as inquiries involving explanation of court procedures and clarification of legal terms
• judgment in dealing with confidential materials
• the ability to exercise initiative and can work independently or as a member of a team with minimum supervision

Organizational Skills:

You have:
• organizational skills to prioritize own workload and assist colleagues to ensure deadlines and timeframes are met

Computer Skills:

You have:
• in-depth knowledge and ability to use a personal computer
• knowledge of word processing, applications such as MS Word to manipulate text and produce letters, memoranda, reports and legal documents
• knowledge of data base applications to enter, track, and update data
