The Provincial and Demonstration schools offer the Ontario curriculum at the elementary and secondary levels as well as specialized integrated programming. Based in Milton, Ontario, just outside of Toronto, the PDSB schools provide residential and day programs serving elementary and secondary students who are Deaf or hard of hearing.
About the job
As part of the multi-disciplinary team, you will:
• provide psychoeducational/psychological assessment services and case management to a diverse population of students who are deaf or hard of hearing and students with learning disabilities
• provide treatment and consultations for students and families
• consult with staff and families
• develop and monitor special behavior therapy programs for selected students
• provide in-service workshops and individual consultation to school and residential staff, as well as outside agencies
• plan and deliver parent workshops and parenting courses
• assist the Chief Psychologist in the development and coordination of new initiatives
• ability to travel as required
What you bring to the team
Mandatory requirements
• You have a Doctorate in Psychology and registered for independent practice with children and adolescents with the Ontario College of Psychologists (OCP) is required (candidates who are eligible for registration with OCP will also be considered).
• You are, or have the ability and willingness to become, fluent in American Sign Language (ASL).
Technical knowledge and skills:
You have:
• knowledge and experience working with students with learning disabilities and students who are Deaf or hard of hearing and the implications their hearing status may have on development psychologically, socially and educationally
• demonstrated training and skills in assessments /interventions
• training and experience in the analysis and treatment of children's behaviour
• excellent working knowledge of psychological treatment techniques
Communication and interpersonal skills:
You can:
• write reports and express complex findings and ideas in clear terms when communicating research results in publications, workshops, and lectures
• work effectively as a team with teaching staff in designing specific educational objectives for students
• collaborate with other psychologists to refine test procedures for students
• establish relationships with students and parents to provide counsel, conduct group sessions and deliver effective parent education courses
Analytical and research skills:
You have:
• analytical skills to interpret psychological findings and communicate these in a way that can be clearly understood by parents and teachers
• research familiarity to refine and extend current psycho educational test batteries, collect and compile test results data, and report on findings
