As a Family Life and Volunteer Team Leader at the Fort William Historical Park, you will provide planning and coordination for educational family programs, as well as volunteer and food programs and services.

PLEASE NOTE: This position may require you to attend overnight functions, travel to out of town events and off-hour programs, and work on holidays and weekends

About the job

In this role, you will:

• Oversee the development and implementation of Family Life Living History programs, monitor program quality and ensure compliance with established education curriculum;
• Conduct research to deliver new and innovative educational and interpretive programs;
• Establish partnerships with Aboriginal groups, community cultural groups and educators;
• Coordinate the portrayal of domestic cultural activities in support of living history and educational programs;
• Participate in historical dramatizations, festivals and special events;
• Coordinate heritage food service for educational interpretive programs and special events, and ensure compliance with health regulations;
• Recruit volunteers, and coordinate volunteer services for the Park's programs, events and interpretive program delivery.

Mandatory requirements

• You must have a valid class G driver's licence

Volunteer Coordination, Training and Leadership Skills:

• You have knowledge of volunteer planning, recruitment, training, deployment and retention strategies
• You can plan, develop and implement educational historical programs that are in compliance with established education curriculum
• You can lead, train and educate staff and volunteers in the portrayal and depiction of period and contemporary activities
• You can guide and support staff in the execution of educational programs and events, and resolve operational and program related issues

Communication, Customer Service and Interpersonal Skills:

• You can work effectively with staff, volunteers, internal and external stakeholders
• You can develop program objectives, plans and proposals, and conduct program assessments and evaluations
• You can present recommendation to managers, and represent the ministry with community partners and groups

Historical and Dramatization Knowledge:

• You have knowledge of Canadian Fur Trade history throughout the early 1800's
• You have knowledge of period techniques, period fare (agriculture and wilderness), indigenous and European fare, cooking techniques, and 19th century horticulture
• You have knowledge of progressive living history methodologies, application and teaching for all ages
• You have knowledge of curatorial and interpretive fields

Culinary and Crafting Skills:

• You have culinary skills in open hearth cooking and bread making, using heritage and modern equipment, and meal preparation of historic and present day fare for large groups
• You have knowledge of health and safety practices for food preparation and handling
• You have crafting skills (e.g., sewing, leather, bead work) to teach staff and produce items for the interpretive program and revenue generating opportunities

Analytical, Research and Evaluative Skills:

• You can develop authentic, new and innovative programs, creative learning activities and food services that incorporate culture from the 1800's for all ages
• You can evaluate and assess program effectiveness, identify opportunities and recommend areas for improvement
• You can conduct historical research on Family Life practices and activities
