Are you looking for a leadership role where you can showcase your technical skills? If so, the Growth and Yield (G&Y) field program is looking for a person to guide and organize staff to support their extensive field based program.

About the job

• provide technical advice and support in the planning, coordinating and delivery for the Growth and Yield (G&Y) field program
• provide quality control in the location, establishment, acquisition and transfer of Growth and Yield plot data
• provide instruction and guidance on procedural changes to Growth and Yield data collection and capture
• provide direction and feedback on quality assurance, measurement precision and production
• support the Forest Productivity Specialist with data collection, standards, resources, and various administration requirements

PLEASE NOTE: This position requires the ability to undertake physically demanding fieldwork in remote locations, in all types of weather conditions.

What you bring to the team


Mandatory requirement:

• You possess a valid class G driver's licence or equivalent as recognized by the province of Ontario.

Technical knowledge and skills:

• You have extensive field-based knowledge of forest ecosystems (i.e. vegetation identification, soil description/classification, forest mensuration) and the use of forest ecosystem classification techniques.
• You have proven experience in the work of locating, establishing and measuring plots.
• You have knowledge of information gathering (e.g. data collection and inventory techniques, data preparation and entry/digitizing) to ensure electronic data is captured and available for various data reports.
• You have knowledge of personal computers and their operation in both field and office setting with the ability to use various software programs (i.e.word-processing, data bases, spreadsheets, electronic mail and internet).
• You have experience with field equipment operations to perform various field maintenance, and repair on equipment (i.e. Global Position Satellite (GPS) units, diameter tapes, electronic tree height measuring devices, and increment borers).

Group Leadership skills:

• You have group leadership skills to assign and monitor work and report on progress.

Analytical and problem-solving skills:

• You have well developed analytical and problem-solving skills to make project-level decisions and determine the nature and extent of deviations from existing data standards and protocols and the ability to recommend corrective action.
• You can resolve technical problems in remote operational field situations to determine options, select course of action and document reasons/rationale.

Planning and coordinating skills:

• You have good planning and coordinating skills to organize schedules and coordinate human and equipment resources (e.g. accommodations, and vehicle transportation) for field projects.

Communication and interpersonal skills:

• You have interpersonal skills to effectively work through requests and concerns with internal technician and clients contracts, regarding plot productions and quality issues.
• You have well developed written communications skills to prepare technical reports and data summaries.
