Are you looking for a great opportunity with the Ministry of the Environment Conservation and Parks to engage with people from the north and work with a dynamic and motivated team? As an Assistant Park Superintendent within this substantial geographical area, you will play an essential role by assisting the Park Superintendent with the planning, developing and managing an extremely diverse cluster of parks, while protecting their natural and recreational heritage values.
The Park Area Cluster is a large and complex grouping of provincial parks which includes 3 operating parks, 2 operating partnered parks and 30 non-operating parks which are somewhat remote and are separated by long distances. Retail stores, schools (French and English), medical and dental facilities, and churches of most denominations are available in the Timmins area. Cottage and outdoor recreational opportunities including boating, fishing, and snowmobiling are popular in the area.
Please note: Ideally, this position will work based out of Ivanhoe Lake Provincial Park during the summer operating season and in South Porcupine, at the Ontario Government Complex in the off season. On-site government accommodations may be available at Ivanhoe Lake only during the operating season.
About the job
In this role, you will:
• provide leadership and supervision to a team within this cluster of parks as you deliver the Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks / Ontario Parks mandate with a focus on ecological sustainability
• participate and lead in the creation, review and implementation of strategic maintenance and development plans
• plan, coordinate, direct evaluate and manage park operations
• assist in planning, preparing and administering a program budget
• provide leadership on human resources activities such as recruitment, training and evaluation of staff, assigning work schedules and managing performance
• provide leadership in the delivery of high quality service to park guests, stakeholders, service providers and other interest groups
• manage land uses to ensure compliance with legislation and policy
What you bring to the team
Mandatory requirements:
• You must have the ability to obtain a Park Warden designation and ability to can meet the standards in Use of Force training.
• You must possess a valid class 'G' driver's licence or equivalent, as recognized by the Province of Ontario.
• You must be able to work shifts, weekends and statutory holidays as required.
Leadership and management skills:
• You possess strong interpersonal and team building skills to provide leadership, monitor performance and promote excellence in customer service and team performance.
• You are able to set priorities, meet tight deadlines, work under pressure and maintain a high level of accuracy.
• You have demonstrated skills in managing financial budgets and human resources, including labour relations issues.
Program delivery knowledge:
• You possess knowledge of resource management principles related to park management, operations and planning.
• You have a good understanding of accounting, revenue practices, expenditure control and supply and contract management.
• You possess knowledge of general facility, grounds keeping and utilities coupled with knowledge of capital development including the ability to understand site development and construction plans.
Communication and stakeholder relations:
• You have strong communication skills to provide advice and recommendations to senior managers and staff.
• You have the ability to prepare correspondence and develop/maintain operating and emergency plans.
• You possess relationship building skills to foster and manage relationships with staff, volunteers, visitors, service providers, First Nations Communities, municipalities and other government agencies.
Analytical skills:
• You possess analytical skills and the ability to work independently and use good judgment.
• You have organizational skills to prepare schedules, organize and implement work and special projects.
• You are able to apply and interpret relevant legislation, policies and procedures and possess working knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act.
Computer proficiency:
• You are proficient with personal computers including word processing, spreadsheet, presentation, database, record keeping, internet and electronic mail software application.
