Fort William Historical Park (FWHP) seeks an experienced Farmer to provide hands-on farming and gardening.

We are looking for an enthusiastic and hard-working individual who has a passion for history and loves to spend time outdoors. You will have an opportunity to be part of a living history program portraying early 19th century farm activities.

PLEASE NOTE: This position may require you to work during non-business hours, and on holidays and weekends.

About the job

As a Farmer, you will:

• care for large and small farm animals (e.g., draught horses, cattle, pigs, sheep and chickens), and inspect animals for injury and illness
• perform gardening functions (e.g., prepare soil, plant seeds, apply fertilizer, select vegetables)
• drive a two-horse team of draught horses to perform farm activities
• support the living history program delivery and participate in historical dramatizations
• provide technical direction and training to students
• operate farm equipment, machinery and power tools
• prepare weekly reports and monitor inventory records

What you bring to the team

Mandatory:

• You must have a valid class "G" driver's licence or equivalent, as recognized by the Province of Ontario.

Farming skills:

• You have farming skills in general animal husbandry (feeding, grooming, health maintenance) for horses, cattle, pigs, sheep and chickens.
• You can perform heritage dairy operations (hand milking, cream separation and butter making).
• You can operate farm equipment, machinery, and manual and power tools.

Gardening skills:

• You have practical gardening skills to plant, grow and harvest a mixed vegetable garden.

Communication and interpersonal skills:

• You can interact with visitors and participate in interpretive demonstrations and educational workshops.
• You can provide technical direction and training to students.

Problem-solving and evaluative skills:

• You can provide input into the development of new and innovative farming programs.
• You can review quality of work performed by students.
• You can prepare reports and monitor inventory.

Teamster skills:

• You can drive a two-horse team of draught horses for farm activities, special events and parades (e.g., bush skidding, ploughing and hauling, sleigh and hay rides).

Note:

• In accordance with the Ontario Public Service (OPS), Employment Screening Checks Policy (ESCP), the top candidate(s) may be required to undergo a security screening check. Refer to the above to determine the screening checks that are required for this position.
  
  You will be responsible for obtaining the criminal record check at your own expense and provide it, along with your written consent, to the Transition and Security Office (TSO), Talent Acquisition Branch (TAB), HR Service Delivery Division (HRSDD) to evaluate the results. If applicable, the TSO, with your written consent, will request and obtain any additional employment screening checks that were not obtained directly by you. (Note: If a Vulnerable Sector Screening Check is required, it must also be obtained in person at your local police service).
