Bring your knowledge and skills in food preparation and safety to the Ministry of the Solicitor General, Toronto South Detention Centre, where you will assist with large volume food production for the institution.
PLEASE NOTE:
• This position supervises inmate helpers for majority of working time and will be eligible for Custodial Responsibility Allowance
• This position requires the incumbent to work in a cold environment on a regular basis in order to perform tasks in walk-in freezers as well as use refrigerators
• This position is casual/on-call working 0 to 40 hours per week with no guaranteed minimum amount of hours (including weekends and statutory holidays, based on operational requirements)

• Assist in the production and service of cold and hot regular and diet trays
• Ensure food services equipment and supplies are used and stored in a safe and efficient manner
• Ensure cleanliness, safety and security are maintained at all times
• Assist in training staff and supervising inmate helpers
What you bring to the team
Mandatory requirements
• You must possess current First Aid and Heartsaver Certificates (or the ability to obtain)
• You have a valid Food Handler's Certificate
Food Services Knowledge and Experience
• You have knowledge of and experience with cook-chill/retherm safety principles as well as standard cooking and food preparation/storage procedures and methods
• You can assist in the preparation of a variety of foods, volume meals, and restricted diets
• You have knowledge of food safety practices
• You are experienced in the proper use of kitchen equipment and tools
• You can follow health and safety standards and practices (i.e. Public Health Act, Health Protection and Promotion Act, Sanitation Code for Canada's Food Industry, Occupational Health and Safety Act, Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS))
• You have demonstrated ability to understand and comply with corporate policies and protocols in order to acquire knowledge of institutional security practices and procedures
Communication and Interpersonal Skills
• You can use tact and diplomacy to interact with staff and inmate helpers
• You are able to supervise inmates in close quarters and evaluate performance
• You have written communication skills and basic computer skills to prepare reports on inmate behaviour and performance
Analytical and Problem-Solving Skills
• You can recognize hazards and shortages of food supplies and report to supervisor
• You can observe and report any potential problems in food quality, sanitation, or hygiene control

Note:
