The Ontario Labour Relations Board is seeking a Solicitor to join its team for a permanent opportunity.
About the job
Duties will include:
- Reporting to the Director Registrar, you will assume responsibility as legal counsel to the OLRB, providing legal advice to the Chair, Vice-Chairs, management and staff on employment and labour relations -related matters under various Ontario statutes and the internal administration of the Board in order to comply with various government policies and statutes.
- You will be responsible for representing the OLRB in various legal proceedings including judicial reviews and at the Human Rights Tribunal of Ontario.
What you bring to the team
Mandatory requirements
• You must have membership in good standing with the Law Society of Ontario and be entitled to practise law.
Knowledge and Experience:
- You have through knowledge of labour and administrative law and relevant administrative and employment statutes in particular Ontario's Labour Relations Act, Employment Standards Act and Occupational Health & Safety Act.
- You have good knowledge of labour legislation in other provinces and federally.
- You have demonstrated experience in labour relations gained through practice of labour law and/or academic employment.
Communication Skills:
- You have demonstrated ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing to both professional and non-professional audiences (including the public and the media) and to provide assistance in the drafting of decisions.
- You have experience presenting legal arguments in court and to other administrative agencies.
- You have the ability to present seminars, speeches and discussions.
- You have the ability to prepare and lead educational activities for the staff of the OLRB, including supervising articling students.
Analytical, Research and Organizational Skills:
- You have the ability to conduct and synthesize research including but not limited to statutes and case law.
- You have the ability to organize and edit Board monthly reports and Highlights and other public releases.
- You have the ability to recognize and assess the legal implications in the OLRB's policy and administrative decisions.
- You have the demonstrated ability to analyze issues and prepare and present legal arguments in court and administrative tribunal proceedings.
- You have subject matter expertise to ensure that the agency achieves its mandate.
- You can provide advice to senior management on strategy development, decision-making, issues management, compliance with government policy, regulations and statutes and accountability in order to support the OLRB's effectiveness.
- You will undertake special projects and assignments for the Chair and Director/Registrar.
