About the job

In this role, you will:

• Conduct mental health assessments and provide mental health services to youth
• Provide one on one counselling and health teaching to youth, and advocate for quick and effective resolution of youth placement
• Develop and implement facility treatment and management programs in collaboration with the clinical teams
• Monitor adherence and response to treatment plans and health care interventions using internal tracking mechanism
• Establish and maintain positive working relationships with other staff members and external stakeholders, and share knowledge and expertise
• Practice in accordance with College of Nurses of Ontario Practice Standards and Ministry expectations
• Practice in accordance with the security requirements of the facility

What you bring to the team


Mandatory requirements

• You are currently a Registered Nurse in good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario
• The successful candidate will be required to enroll in a Mental Health certification program prior to job offer, and complete the certification requirements within a specified period of time. The ministry will accept the following certification or proof of enrolment:

• Canadian Nurses Association – Current Psychiatric and Mental Health Certification
• Centre for Addiction and Mental Health - Concurrent Disorders Certification
• Accredited Colleges in Canada – Mental Health Certification

Nursing and Mental Health Knowledge and Experience

• You have in-depth knowledge of youth/adolescent mental health nursing theory, community mental health resources, evidence-based practices and current treatment options, normally acquired through enrolment in/completion of a post-diploma/post-degree certificate program in mental health, and supplemented by continuing education in mental health/psychiatry
• You can interpret and apply relevant legislation (such as the Mental Health Act, Regulated Health Professions Act, Child and Family Services Act, Health Care Consent Act)
• You demonstrate experience in completing comprehensive mental health assessments, and you can elicit, interpret and evaluate information from youths and other sources, identify strengths and challenges, and draw conclusions to develop treatment and care plans
• You can evaluate responses from youths to planned interventions, and modify interventions in collaboration with the inter-professional team to achieve established goals
• You can address emergency situations and implement appropriate therapeutic interventions

Communication and Interpersonal Skills

• You can present information in a clear and concise manner, and provide health teaching to a diverse youth population
• You can work collaboratively with inter-professional teams, facility staff and community agencies partners
• You can effectively advocate for and encourage youths in the participation of their plan of care, and support them in achieving identified goals
• You can clearly communicate care and progress through documentation (e.g., progress notes, written care plans, clinical and administrative summaries)
