The Job

Do you want to play a key role in supporting the competitiveness of Ontario's livestock sector? If so, this is your opportunity to join the dynamic Livestock team and help to lead Ontario's technology transfer efforts in the assessment of practices, products and research related to the feed ingredient and by product sector.

This role develops and maintains effective partnerships with the agriculture sector and farm/commodity organization members by providing critical knowledge and understanding that will help clients along the agricultural value chain improve their competitive position.

The Feed Ingredient and By Products Specialist role requires excellent oral and written communication skills to discuss and present information effectively through reports, articles, electronic media and other education materials.

The Agriculture Development Branch is responsible for dealing with issues relating to agricultural production (crops and livestock),. The branch promotes high quality agricultural production through the application of best management practices, on-farm quality assurance programs and plant and animal health strategies to ensure a competitive and environmentally responsible agri-food sector..

About the job

As a Provincial Specialist, you will:
• act as the lead provincial specialist in the development and promotion of information and tools to support the feed ingredient and by-product sector
• research and verify leading agricultural economic research and business practices from around the world and adapt the findings to Ontario industry needs
• facilitate industry change through educational and awareness building tools such as publications, media releases, social media, speaking engagements, training workshops and one-on-one meetings with clients

What you bring to the team


Mandatory requirements

• You have a valid G driver's license or equivalent to drive on Ontario highways to conduct site visits at rural and remote locations

Agricultural Expertise

• You have expert knowledge of scientific theories, principles and practices of production, economics, business management and marketing related to the feed ingredient and by-product sector
• You have knowledge of the agricultural industry, farming and the agricultural value-chain including its economic significance, social importance and the roles and mandates of farm and commodity organizations

Analytical and Problem-Solving Skills

• You have analytical and problem-solving skills to assess information, education and training needs of agricultural clients
• You have analytical and evaluative skills to investigate issues, new trends and developments related to the feed ingredient and by-product sector (e.g. mycotoxins in feed, understanding the trends and considerations for domestic and imported feed ingredients and by-products, etc.)

Consultation and Facilitation Skills

• You have tact, diplomacy and consensus-building skills to establish and enhance partnerships, coalitions and networks
• You are able to assess industry educational needs and develop appropriate training and educational materials
• You can encourage and motivate agricultural and rural organizations to develop and support policies and programs that encourage the adoption and maintenance of sustainable practices in their agricultural and rural communities

Communication and Interpersonal Skills

• You use clear and concise language when creating a variety of written communication documents (ex. reports, educational materials)
• You can discuss and present technical information and ensure it is understood

Project Management Skills

• You have planning and coordination skills to manage project activities and resource requirements
