Would you like to be part of a team involved in conducting forensic biology examinations and analyses? Ontario's Centre of Forensic Sciences is one of the most extensive forensic science facilities in North America. In this role you will conduct forensic testing and examinations on a variety of case-related items and samples in support of criminal and other investigations.

Note: the results of this competition may be used to fill upcoming permanent or temporary vacancies within 14 months of the closing date of this job advertisement.

What can I expect to do in this role?

Within a team environment, as assigned, you will:
• examine case materials using a variety of microscopes to identify evidential material
• perform a range of forensic analyses used to identify body fluids including blood, semen and saliva
• perform a range of forensic DNA analyses on evidence items, including extraction, real-time quantitative PCR, capillary electrophoresis and massively parallel sequencing
• demonstrate your expertise in advanced analytical instruments for the testing of DNA samples
• use your skills in hardware and software applications to assist in automation of DNA processes
• use your skills in software applications to assist with data management of DNA testing results
• generate, interpret and compile data and analytical reports

How do I qualify?

Technical Knowledge and Experience

•You have experience with laboratory practices and techniques and experience in processing high volumes of assigned work in a laboratory environment
•You have knowledge of scientific theories in such disciplines as chemistry, biology, biochemistry, molecular biology and their application to forensic science
•You can set up, operate and troubleshoot advanced scientific instrumentation for the testing of DNA
•You are able to take an active role in research and development of new instrumentation or methodology
•You have time management skills to ensure efficient work flow of assigned tasks

Quality Assurance & Health and Safety

• You have demonstrated knowledge of laboratory quality assurance systems and how they are used to confirm, validate and ensure reliability of test results
• You have knowledge of accreditation standards for analytical laboratories and legislative authorities (such as WHMIS, Occupational Health and Safety Act)
•You can identify precautions to be taken in handling biohazards and toxic substances

Communication (oral and written) and Interpersonal Skills

• You have experience preparing data findings and detailed notes of observations and tests
• You can draft operational procedures for new equipment as well as train colleagues in the operation of the equipment
• You can work effectively in a team environment
