About the job
In this challenging and technically diverse role, you will:
• produce legal and pre-engineering survey drawings, GIS applications and themed maps, digital terrain models, cross-sections and horizontal alignments by using least squares adjustment software, coordinate geometry software, GIS software, computer assisted drafting software, etc.
• produce and maintain Engineering and Title Records and other map products
• review reports, plans, cross-sections, maps and other data sets for accuracy and content
• provide guidance and feedback to ministry staff and service providers regarding technical issues such
• liaise with and provide technical information, advice, training and guidance to partners, stakeholders and internal ministry clients and respond to technical enquires from external agencies
What you bring to the team
Technical Knowledge and Skills:
• You have knowledge of legal and engineering survey principles, practices and procedures (e.g., cross-sections, volumes, profiles, contours, digital terrain models (DTMs), three-dimensional (3D) models) ) to support the planning, design, maintenance and construction of highways
• You have the ability to interpret and apply federal and provincial survey related legislation (e.g. Public Transportation and Highway Improvement Act, Surveys Act)
• You have knowledge of field survey principles and practices, data collection procedures and related survey equipment used to gather field data both digitally (e.g., Total Station, GIS applications and Global Positioning System (GPS)/Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) survey receivers, LiDAR) or manually (e.g., Measuring tape/chain)
• You have knowledge of mathematics (e.g. geometry, coordinate geometry, trigonometry, closure techniques and statistical analysis using least squares adjustments)
Specialized Computer Software Knowledge and Skills:
• You have experience in specialized computer software (e.g. AutoCAD Civil 3D), digital terrain modeling, alignments, drafting techniques and standards
• You have experience in GIS tools, software and databases (e.g. ArcGIS, ArcGIS Online)
• You have knowledge of GIS automation tools available via software applications (e.g., FME, Model Builder) and programming languages (e.g., Python, VBScript, HTML)
• You have demonstrated understanding of control networks, co-ordinate geometry, least squares adjustments, and the use of map projections and datum to prepare geomatics generated products using AutoCAD, ArcGIS, Access, Excel, etc.
Analytical, Organizational and Decision-Making Skills:
• You have analytical skills required to interpret survey data and assess evidence, and to identify, isolate and correct errors
• You demonstrate judgement and decision making skills to determine if deliverables are acceptable and conform to ministry standards, and to resolve conflicts and manage changing priorities
• You have effective organizational skills to coordinate and organize own work activities on multiple projects with varying levels of complexity
Communication and Interpersonal Skills:
• You have oral and written communication skills required to relate technical information to internal staff, consultants and external agencies; ability to write memos and reports
• You are able to tactfully provide guidance and feedback and respond to inquiries from staff, consultants and external agencies
• You are capable of dealing with the demands and pressures of unexpected changes or modifications to deadlines on short notice.
