The Fish and Wildlife Services Branch is looking for an enthusiastic and highly motivated Technician to assist with development and implementation of programs.

About the job

In this role, you will:

• collect scientific data
• operate, maintain and purchase equipment related to field data collection including boats, motors, nets, weigh scales, and safety equipment
• provide training and advice to staff and ensure high quality data collection
• compile data and prepare summary reports as requested.

**Please note: the position requires the ability to work in adverse conditions where there is a high probability of experiencing symptoms of motion sickness.

What you bring to the team

Mandatory requirements

• You must have a valid class 'G' driver's licence or equivalent, as recognized by the Province of Ontario. The offer of employment is conditional upon the successful candidate providing proof that s/he has a valid driver's licence upon being hired.
• You have a MED DVS (Marine Emergency Duties - Domestic Vessel Safety) certificate from Coast Guard or you have the ability to obtain one.
• You have valid certification equivalent to or greater than Vessel Master 150 Gross Tonnage, Domestic (sec 129, Marine Personnel Regulations, Canada Shipping Act) or you have the ability to acquire this certification.
• You have a valid SVOP (Small Vessel Operator Proficiency) certificate or you have the ability to acquire this certification.

Technical expertise:

• You have strong working knowledge of fisheries biology, habitat assessment, research techniques, and fish aging techniques.
• You have demonstrated analytical skills and attention to detail in processing fish assessments including determining age of fish.

Fieldwork skills:

• You have demonstrated ability to operate/maintain various types of fishing gear, boats, motors and limnological equipment.

Computer proficiency:

• You have computer proficiency with regular office hardware and software, and field devices for limnological analysis.

Interpersonal skills:

• You have the ability to work in a team environment including providing direction to staff and to coordinate with project leaders.

Communication skills:

• You have strong communication skills to explain and clarify procedures, and to prepare technical reports, operational standards, and field protocols.
• You have the demonstrated ability to apply the Occupational Health and Safety Act and those Regulations made under the Act that apply to the workplace and the work being performed, in order to ensure the safety of field crews.

Additional information:

Note:

• Effective July 1, 2020, the correct salary range for this position will be $24.54 to $27.32 per hour/week in compliance with current OPSEU collective agreement provisions.
