The Job
Consider this opportunity in the Transportation Trade and Investment Branch, Northern Development Division where you will provide advice and expertise for trade and investment in Northern Ontario.

We are seeking your expertise and experience with research, trade and investment attraction and strategic business planning to support Northern economic prosperity.

The Ministry
The Ministry of Energy, Northern Development and Mines (ENDM) is responsible for the provincial energy and minerals sectors and is the regional ministry for Northern Ontario. The ministry strives to make Ontario strong, healthy, prosperous and Open for Business through the following program areas: Energy - develops electricity, natural gas and oil policies that maintain a safe, reliable and affordable energy supply across the province, and to power the economy in Ontario; Northern Economic Development - advances economic development in Northern Ontario through collaborative partnerships and solutions that reflect the unique needs of northerners; and Mines and Minerals - supports a strong and sustainable minerals sector and ensures the fair, effective and efficient administration of Ontario's Mining Act, for the protection of public health and safety, and the environment.

The Branch
The Transportation, Trade and Investment Branch delivers transportation and infrastructure programs in the North, such as the Northern Highways Program. It also promotes trade and investment by assisting Northern Ontario firms to participate in export markets, and by attracting national and international clients to invest in the North.

About the job

In this role, you will:
• Provide advice and expertise to senior management and partners regarding sector attraction, expansion and development
• Lead the cooperative development and execution of investment attraction and export marketing initiatives
• Lead the development of projects, strategies and initiatives to enhance emerging sectors, build capacity and attract international investment
• Develop and enhance relationships with key partners and stakeholder through consultations, forums, working committees and task forces for coordinated approaches on business development
• Analyze long-term implications, identify risks and provide strategic options

What you bring to the team

Technical Knowledge and Skills

• You have knowledge of economic and socio-economic theory and principles, finance and trade and investment attraction in sectoral, government and international levels
• You can provide advice and expertise on sector attraction, expansion, development and community and socio-economic impacts, return on investment, and outcomes for the northern economy and prosperity
• You have knowledge of economic development, provincial growth planning agenda, northern Ontario priorities, conditions and capacity to understand initiatives and priorities

Research, Analysis and Problem-Solving Skills

• You can provide leadership and expertise in project research and planning to identify a strategic approach to bringing new investment to the region
• You can develop salutations to complex and multi-faceted socio-economic, political, and trade and investment issues
• You can apply conceptual and strategic thinking to enhance northern region community readiness, bring emerging new sectors to maturity, and build long term investment capacity
• You can analyze multiple sources of qualitative and quantitative factors to make recommendations on policy and investment
• You can respond to issues and negotiate resolutions

Project Management and Planning Skills

• You have project management, planning and organizational skills to plan, lead and manage projects, working groups and consultations, including monitoring teams and ensuring completion of deliverables
• You have experience with financial management, policy and program development principles and techniques to provide policy and sector strategy advice

Relationship Building and Communication Skills

• You have the demonstrated ability to build and maintain stakeholder relationships with diverse needs, such as with ministerial, inter-ministerial, municipal, inter-municipal, First Nations, business and industry, education, research, non-governmental and voluntary sectors
• You have networking, negotiation and facilitation skills to foster agreements, drive investment growth and respond to issues
• You have advisory skills to lead consultations with diverse stakeholders with opposing interests to prepare policy and program recommendations that reflect input from all parties
• You have written communication skills to prepare reports, analyses and communication materials for diverse audiences using standard software programs and tools (e.g. Word, Outlook, Excel)
