Bring your expertise, passion and enthusiasm for the research and analysis of information technologies to the Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner of Ontario (IPC) and be a key part of important policy discussions about their impacts on the data privacy, security and access rights of Ontarians. The IPC is an independent officer of the Legislative Assembly of Ontario, which oversees Ontario's access and privacy laws, including the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act, the Municipal Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act, the Personal Health Information Protection Act and the Child, Youth and Family Services Act, 2017.

We are looking to fill one position permanently, and the other position on a one-year term to open up the possibility for candidates interested in joining the IPC for a sabbatical as a scholar- in-residence, a secondment from another public institution, or an executive interchange arrangement from private sector.

About the job

Independently and as part of a team, you will:
• conduct research and analysis on leading edge information technologies in support of the work of the IPC;
• identify and analyze trends in cyber security threats and risk mitigation measures;
• identify and analyze potential impacts of emerging information technologies on personal information management practices;
• develop policy guidance and educational materials for IPC staff, external stakeholders and the general public on information security governance, privacy enhancing technologies and data access issues;
• review and evaluate the technological aspects of information systems, programs, and initiatives;
• provide advice, support and technical forensic analysis in access and privacy complaint investigations and appeals;
• participate in strategic planning and education programs;
• prepare briefings for the Commissioners and senior staff on the potential impacts of current and emerging technologies on data access and privacy issues.

What you bring to the team

You will qualify for this position by demonstrating:

• extensive knowledge of current and emerging information technologies and their potential impacts on data access and privacy;
• solid understanding of information security systems, risks and governance frameworks, privacy enhancing technologies, data analytics and artificial intelligence;
• experience in policy development/analysis;
• well-developed analytical/problem solving skills;
• ability to plan and conduct extensive research, and to prepare written evaluations and recommendations;
• ability to use good judgement in all aspects of your daily work;
• well-developed oral and written communication skills and especially an ability to communicate in plain language.
