About the job

• The Biodiversity and Monitoring Section of Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry in Peterborough leads delivery of the province's wildlife monitoring program as well as other wildlife monitoring activities.
• Working closely with the Provincial Wildlife Monitoring Program Leader, the intern will contribute to development and delivery of the Ontario Wildlife Monitoring Network by developing and implementing approaches for processing camera trap data and automating image analysis, performing statistical analyses, writing reports and providing written and oral briefings to scientists, partners, and senior managers, conducting field work in remote locations and reviewing published literature.

Mandatory requirements

• Valid Class G Driver's Licence or equivalent as recognized by the Province of Ontario.
• Ability to travel to remote field locations frequently and for multiple days.
• Physical ability to handle heavy equipment and work under adverse weather conditions.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Knowledge
• Knowledge of the theory, principles, and practices of wildlife management; knowledge of survey design, field sampling principles, methods, and techniques for monitoring the status and trends of wildlife populations.
• Knowledge of sound data management principles and tools to develop and implement workflows for the analysis of scientific data in support of natural resource monitoring or management.
• Knowledge of statistical methods and tools, and the interpretation of analytical outputs to support monitoring and research objectives using wildlife population and habitat data to
• Knowledge of safe working practices in field and laboratory settings and worker responsibilities under the OH&S Act.

Analytical and Research Skills
• Analytical skills and experience conducting quantitative analysis of ecological data, including statistical and spatial analyses and modelling.
• Experience writing scientific papers or reports for publication.
• Strong organizational and interpersonal, skills to manage multiple projects, solve problems, and work with other staff and partners.
• Project management skills to develop project terms of reference and establish and meet required deliverables
• Demonstrated ability to communicate scientific information clearly and concisely orally and in writing.
• Ability to work independently with periodic direction.
Computer Skills
• Experience using databases to enter, manage, query, and manipulate data.
• Demonstrated ability to use of personal computers and software, including word processing, spreadsheet and database applications (e.g. MS Word, Excel, Access), geographic information systems (e.g. ArcGIS), statistical analysis software (e.g. SPSS, Systat) to assess and analyze information for reports and presentations.

• Experience developing and documenting scripts or applications (e.g., R, Python) would be an asset.

Eligibility

• Proof of eligibility to work in Canada;
• Has graduated or will graduate from an approved or legally authorized college or university with a degree, postgraduate certificate or diploma within the last four years;
• Candidates are only eligible to participate in one MNRF 12-month placement and must not have participated in the MNRF internship program in the past.
